New tires - shop pricing out a TPMS kit?

Called Firestone about some tires. They gave me a decent price, less than tirerack. But also mentioned $40 total for TPMS service and kit for all 4 tires. Was hard to hear the gentleman so I didn't push the issue for now, only agreed to buy the tires for now.

Anyone know what this is? Does the TPMS need to be removed to remove and reinstall the tire?

They're replacing the external nut, o-ring that seals the sensor to wheel, and the valve core in the sensor. It's a good idea to get it done every time the tires replaced, just like replacing valve stems every time a tire is replaced. When I worked at Discounts Tire, most of those kits were only $5-$6 per wheel, so you could probably haggle the price a bit. But I would definitely have it done.

Ah, the more you know.

I only have 18k miles and still on original Advans. Is this recommended at such low mileage?

18k on Advans. Damn. I got a good 10-12k on these tires when I first got the evo.

$40 for all 4 isn't unreasonable. $40/corner is robbery.

To me, it's not worth the headache of a possible slow leak down the road but, that said, the odds are probably in your favor that you'd be fine.

Miles doesn't really matter, it's age. Its' really best to just replace them, like a valve stem. Like any oring, they can start leaking for no apparent reason. And if you leave the nut on there, they can corrode and get stuck..

I'm probably pushing the life on these. I would be concerned if I had to drive in the rain lol

A lot of them were highway miles. 1k from FL to NYC when I got it, then a trip down to SC for the solar eclipse, and a trip up to Montreal. Plus driving around town. If I had some twisties nearby, I'd probably get less life, I just seem to take the bike if I wanna hit up twisties out in PA.
