Question about gearing

I dont currently own an evo x but will buy one in the near future.

In what gear does the GSR hit 60mph? Also what rpm does the car do 80mph 5th gear for freeway cruising?

Stellar24 Feb 14, 2009 01:31 PM

You can hit 60 in 2nd gear if you take it all the way to the fuel cut at 7600 RPMs.

At 80 mph I think it is right around 3900 RPMs. Someone can correct me if I am wrong.

dragon831 Feb 14, 2009 02:16 PM

its definetly after 7000, but id say closer to 7300

Is that a bit high for a 5 speed to cruise at 80mph? My 6 speed mazdaspeed 3 is at 3200rpm at 80mph which i think is a bit high too.

I just took the x on a road trip and set the cruise at 85 and was taching about 4200. it is super high, i had to turn the radio up cause the engine was so loud for so long. i got about 21 mpg. the good thing about it though is that at that point, it is into the turbo and it makes no problems for climbing hills and strong winds. it is definately the highest rpmcar ive had for highway cruising, as it was geared low for short strips of speed from its rally heritage. :mitsu:

lol true that. I just went from las vegas to disney and back this week. 85-100 both ways. averaged 21.5 mpg whihc i thought was pretty damn good for those speeds. It was perfectly in the powerband too so no bogging down going uphill, traffic was light.

And before you naysayers call me out on 85-100 on I-15 going into or leaving cali. There was a ton of cops i just had some good luck and everyone had someone pulled over. It also helps that there were 5 vehicles in our pack cruising.

Edit - Forgot to mention that 85 was just below 4200 rpms in 5th. The droning isnt so bad... it drowns out the GF :P

The GSR *begs* for a 6th gear for freeway cruising. I figure mitsu assumed we'd only track these things :)

That's why we take my wife's tsx on any trips over an hour. The droning is annoying as hell in the evo, and the tsx is nice and comfy.

I miss a 6th gear every time I have to cruise around 80 for a while. Sigh, I don't even want to imagine how bad the drone is when I get a TBE.

Hahaha. I hate it how they alway run their mouths on long trips. They get pissed that you turn up the music because then its obvious that you want her to shut the hell up.
But a loud/high revving engine is perfect for drowning out her cackling. Plus she cant get mad at you...its the cars fault. I love that!

I think its probably boils down to the Japanese road condition. Last I check, its 100kph, which is pedestrian 62mph. Mitsubishi, being a Japanese company, probably thought 5 speed would have been sufficient.

Thats my guess anyway.

And If you think 5 speed is bad on US roads, just imagine how bad it is on European roads.

ms3 and evo x are different cars with different purposes.

staying around 75mph cuts down the noise dramatically.

A few weeks ago I took the family up to Branson, and cruising at 90 in the 540 we could hold a conversation at a civilized volume, and were getting 25 mpg. I do kinda miss my VIII from the economy standpoint; just can't reconcile how a stock X gets worse mileage than a 370 awhp VIII.

at 5th gear, @ 60mph = 3000rpms, 80mph = 3800rpms

GSR is built for the track, not for highway cruising, that is why they made the 5th gear ratio lower than expected to have max torque at powerband. :mitsu:

You are kidding me right.

A high power production car that is not not design for highway/motorway cruising?

While we don't expect an Autobahn monster, the thought of our fast car can't get us faster A-to-B than a non-performance sedan on the highway (without almost redlining the car) is...for a lack of a word at the moment...funny. At least it should be on par in normal driving, in my opinion.

Consider the Highway/track ratio, its logical to have an extra gear for cruising right?

I don't see why Mitubishi can't add an extra gear to faciliate highway crusing, with the 1-5th gear mor track orientated. Its probably cost issue, or maybe as I mention earlier, a 6th gear is reductant on Japanese low speed road.

that's because it's a 6 speed... but any sort of performance car is going to have that higher gearing I believe.

Is it possible to have a longer 5th gear put into a car so that the revs run lower? Sort of how the Vette's use that long 6th gear.
