Engine stops, Fan doesn't...

Ever turn off your Evo and have a fan in the engine compartment keep running?

Not sure what exactly is still turning in there, but something randomly keeps running & won't turn off unless I start the engine and shut it off again. Happened twice now.

do yourself a favor and read the cars manual....

nothing is wrong with your car.

I would go as far as saying 90% of car buyers don't read their car's manual.

Never read any of mine and never really knew anyone who ever did..

But as for an "issue" like this, yeah...it would help to read the manual.

Anybody ever worked on a car before? Sorry I had to. You should have bought a DSM first.

First thing I did was to read the user's manual...anyways, it if because the fans are cooling the temp. of the engine.

It's normal. This is the third or fourth thread about this on the front page too. People are freaking out ha ha ha ha ha

Had mine for about three months and it never did it untill yesterday, probably the hottest day I've driven the car extensively... it went off after about a minute, but at first I was like WTF (just because its never done it before), its normal

It blows my mind how many people don't know this or have never seen a car do this before. I have had people run after me saying my engine is still running.

MR.Wicked Jul 20, 2009 11:41 AM

Every car that has been in my family I have read the manual cover to cover with a cocktail ;) .......nice little saturday afternoon.

MR.Wicked Jul 20, 2009 11:42 AM

also if the fan runs after the car is turned off you have 45 seconds before it explodes....this is true fact I read it in the manual...

Lmao - I love it when I see people getting confused and stopping by my car in the parking lot after I walk away. Too bad it only happens after short drives.

Be happy that the fan is still running. Not only is it still circulating coolant through the engine, it's circulating through the turbo too. It keeps everything cool when the engine gets hot on hot days.

I have had this happen a few times in my car since I got it, It is a NORMAL function.

It has only happened in warmer or hot weather and it only happens when it has been fully warmed up and if I run it for a very short time after fully warmed up.

An example when it occurs:

I drive home from work 20 minute drive (entire engine and cooling system is heat soaked). My kids have left some bikes in the garage in the way of my parking. I shut the car off (could have left it running) NO FAN and get my kid(s) to come move the bikes so I can pull in (this takes maybe a few minutes including a short lecture). The car runs for maybe 10 seconds pulling it in. When I shut it off the fan continues to run for 1-2 minutes.

What I believe is going on here is the engine heat has "soaked" the area where the engine temp sensor is and the engine cooling system has not been run long enough this second time to carry that heat away. This "heat soaking" at the sensor location occured durring the time the engine was off only briefly (few minutes).

I believe this because I never have the fan stay on when I shut the engine off after any substantial drive time, even just a short trip of a couple of minutes when the engine is fully warmed up from a slighly earlier extended drive.
