Overspeed Chime/bell/ding dong or w/e!

Alright, Ive had it. I know ive seen this post before and have tried searching for more than an hour but now I give up.

Driving more than 120 KMPH in the MR just kills! The chime is just too annoying. Has anybody figured a way to get rid of this yet?

Appreciate all the replies and thanks in advance!

Webman Mar 3, 2010 09:26 AM

Wtf? Seriously? I've never known about that. I've had mine up to about 135mph, with no noises.

Xtremist Mar 3, 2010 11:04 AM

Never heard of this one, I didn't own an MR however I had my GSR at 147mph with no noise of any sort lol.

Xcogg Mar 3, 2010 11:24 AM

What's a KMPH?

evo_q8 Mar 3, 2010 12:52 PM

MPH - Miles Per hour!

KMPH - Kilometers Per hour!

evo_q8 Mar 3, 2010 01:09 PM

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uy8GuuuwtV4

see the vid. Its the same thing what happens after 120 KMPH!

Noize Mar 3, 2010 01:19 PM

Is this for Evo IX or X?

evo_q8 Mar 3, 2010 01:32 PM

Evo X MR only

Is it me or does nothing happen in the video after 120 KMPH? All I hear is the music but no chime after that speed.

Kajii Mar 3, 2010 02:16 PM

where do you people go this fast... I've never exceeded 100

mike100 Mar 3, 2010 02:17 PM

you could take the low-tech route and find the piezoelectric speaker for the chime and either cut it out or desolder it from the circuit or maybe relocate it with wires off the board so you could run it with a switch to turn it off.

120 kmph is about 75 mph

babyboy985 Mar 3, 2010 02:50 PM

i got mine up to about 145mph with no chime or noise....

teamnemesis3 Mar 3, 2010 02:56 PM

I had both an Evo IX MR and now 08 Evo X GSR both over 145mph and no noise....{thumbup} maybe this is something new for '10...if so that sucks! {thumbdwn} btw is that a corolla on the video or an EVO?

acm_evo Mar 3, 2010 03:23 PM

There is no chime on the 2010's either. I've had my MR over 140 mph a couple of times, and heard nothing but wind and engine/exhaust noises.

thatguybryan Mar 3, 2010 03:37 PM

Is this in the United States or in Kuwait? The US cars don't have this nuisance.

Antarius Mar 3, 2010 03:37 PM

yep, I've had mine up over 110 mph and there is no "dinger" in the U.S. version of the car... my guess it is something added perhaps only to the ones wherever you imported your X from. My guess would be give your car over to a local mechanic.. have him locate the source of the ding... and rip it out.

AFD Mar 3, 2010 11:51 PM

Just a thought, but maybe the OP has a navi unit installed that's causing this?

Not sure about the factory nav, but there's quite a few that have a built-in speed warning that can be preset to chime after breaking a certain speed. If that's the case, the limit usually can be adjusted as needed or disabled completely.

janlin Mar 4, 2010 12:02 AM

This is only on Middle East spec Evo's

maybe it's the music that kicks in after 120... i found it to be an annoyance..

evo_q8 Mar 4, 2010 01:55 AM

the music that the car has playing is a different thing. U can hear a continuous beep.

My evo 9 mr is the same spec. Doesnt have this annyoing sound!

Toxin Mar 4, 2010 03:43 AM

Drive slowly! Solved!

Seriously though, I'd go bananas since I spend most of my time above 100mph.

Yousef Mar 4, 2010 12:05 PM

mine makes that ANNOYING noise too, it even beep beep beep when I reverse

Crester Mar 4, 2010 12:26 PM

Why would they equip cars in Dubai, etc. with speed warning chimes? That area of the globe is all about fast and expensive cars.

Are there laws in your country requiring these warning chimes?

all cars with no exception have it
my STS makes the beep once and stop but the Evo's is sooooo annoying it never stops after 120km/h

5ynth3t1c Mar 4, 2010 12:41 PM

I wish I knew how to disable it. Almost All the JDM cars have this warning. When I lived in Japan I always hated taking long road trips because of the damn beeping if you went over a certain KPH.

robevo8 Mar 4, 2010 12:52 PM

^^ my jdm silvia did the same thing.... mine was anything over 107kph though... but what is odd my 92' wrx doesn't ding....

best bet is to find the dinger and unplug it

Crester Mar 4, 2010 01:15 PM

Thank God they don't have that in Canada. Almost everybody here does 120km/h on our highway. Infact going to work I'm typically doing 140km/h.

The 5 speed evo x doesnt do this! I think its only the MR's! There are no laws regarding that beep in the gulf...

wiretap Mar 5, 2010 07:37 AM

There was a thread about this before. Some non-US models have the chime. It *might* be able to be disabled through the ECU.. but a sure way to get rid of the chime is to take out the gauge cluster.. then on the back of it you'll see a little black round cylinder with a small hole in it (speaker).. desolder that to eliminate the sound or put a sticker over the hole so the chime isn't as loud. Then put the gauge cluster back in and you're good to go.

evo_q8 Mar 6, 2010 04:01 AM

Thanks for the advice! ill try this and let ya'll know!

Sin13 May 3, 2010 12:58 PM

i have an evo 7 and an X, never had any chimes or beeps on the 7, however the chime on the X after 120k and in R Gear is just killing :S i have talked to dealer about it and they said its the 1st they had with this issue, she is going in tomorrow i hope to get rid off it asp,
Evo X MR Bahrain :crap:

brtecson May 3, 2010 01:24 PM

I'm glad usdm x's dont have this :o

greydragon May 5, 2010 07:29 PM

Wow that would suck, I'm Happy to be Canadian.

Sin13 May 6, 2010 12:41 PM

No luck with the dealer “removing the beeper is a Liability” :( , is there a way to access the dealer advance setting menu?? Before I start taking things apart from my 2 week old evo.

[I.R.A.]_FBi May 6, 2010 01:02 PM

my uncle's JDM corolla ae91 had this, just ignored it

evo_q8 May 8, 2010 02:46 PM

well just received info from the Dubai delerships that it can be done through the MUT they have at the dealership. I personally used it and tried entering every option available but couldnt find it. Ill be calling the DXB dealers and see if he can walk me through the process.

Sin13 May 9, 2010 02:44 AM

that would be worth a try, thank you :)

Yousef May 9, 2010 02:54 AM

my friend disabled it @ Dubai dealer
they did not disable speed warning only, all warnings were gone

ohitisethan May 10, 2010 08:46 AM

i notice that Canada have really high speed limits its awesome.

I HATE the reverse beeps {thumbdwn} ! I'm going to the dealer when I hit 8000kms to try to fix it. I don't mind the 120kmh speed warnings though, kinda wakes me up when I have no idea that I've reached 120kmh :D

Widoww Jun 1, 2010 10:04 AM

i just got mine saturday evo x MRt basically the CDn version fully loaded. Ive had it upto 150 just goin downhill on the highway and nothing but my rockford pounding. No bells, chimes, whistles, or steam whisltles here

waleedmango Sep 15, 2013 05:32 AM

I know I'm bumping an old thread, but I thought it's gonna help somebody.

About 90% of the cars in Middle East and maybe some Asian markets have the same warning chime triggered over 120KPH
Luckily I have a US spec EVO that doesn't have this annoying sound :D

In order to disable it there are 2 methods :

" WARNING : I'm not responsible if my instructions damaged your vehicle or voided your warranty "

1- Remove your Gauge Cluster "Speedo" and try to find the source of the sound, usually it's a small black speaker that looks like an old motherboard speaker, just un-weld it and you're good to go.
The only downside to this method is that you are going to lose all of the regular warnings e.g. seat belt, tire pressure.. etc. but if you have the know-how maybe you can fit a toggle switch to that and disable it whenever you are ready to go MAAD .
" Done it successfully with 2006 Toyota Corolla, 2006 Mazda 6 " {thumbup}

2- Using the factory diagnostic tool, you will be able to get access to user parameters and disable it.
" Done it successfully with 2003 VW Passat - in a workshop " {thumbup}

For Mitsubishi vehicles you have yo use the M.U.T. III which is the dealer diagnostic tool and it's expensive, but some of forum members were able to use a Lexia-3 which is the diagnostic tool for Citroen and Peugeot to change some of the parameters in Outlander and EVO.

I ordered one off eBay for 90$ to use it on my friend's 2012 Peugeot, but I will try it on my EVO also to see if i'm able to change any of the parameters.

Iowa999 Sep 15, 2013 08:52 AM

The above post is a great wake-up of an old thread. Just about every post between the original and the above is either worthless or an example of people boasting about speeding. I'm happy to have the thread going again, but if it turns into more "I've gone 165 with no beeps" or "you pinhead, the correct acronym for kilometers per hours is GHD," then I'm deleting just about every post other than the first and the above. Thanks.

Got the Lexia 3 unit yesterday and ruined my EVO's computer by mistake, i'm trying to find a solution now.

Anyway, I succeeded with the over speed alarm de-activation for my friend's Peugeot 508

The following screenshot pulled from Peugeot using Diagbox 7.02

Attachment 312817

And this screenshot pulled from my EVO using the same device and program, I'm not sure if this one is the correct parameter to change

Attachment 312818

WARNING : Don't ever choose the automatic configuration as I did and ruined my car setting, because it's going to apply the Citroen's C crosser values to your EVO  Be aware please.
