Launching and failing and it's after-effects

Hey guys I'm a new evo x owner and I must say I love this car lol. Anyway straight to the point. So I tried launching my car today and I definitely failed miserably. I only did it once. Now when I tried launching the evo I was at 5k RPMs, first gear clutch engaged and what not. So my mistake was that I slowly let the clutch off and it didn't do ****. Yeah I know I suck. And I know next to nothing about cars. And on top of that this car is obviously turbocharged. I work on jet engines lol I barely know **** about engines on vehicles. So anyway I kept goin after miserably failing at the launch and like a couple seconds later this STRONG plastic burning smell started coming into my car through the vents (I had my heater on). This scared the living **** out of me so I stopped in the middle of the road and hopped out, turned the car off and opened up the hood to see where that smell was coming from. I was able to pin point a general area and it was coming from the left side of the engine (while sitting on the drivers side). I'm going to go ahead and guess that the turbo is on that side of the engine. Now the question is, what made that smell? Did something happen to the turbocharger? Should I be worried? Should I take it to a dealer ship and get it checked out? I don't want this car taking a huge **** on me. Because I would definitely cry. It's a brand new 2014 evo x with 1500 miles on it. But for sure I will never ever try to launch again.

I think you're trying to troll us! either that or you're some 16 yr old that daddy bought a new car for he isn't suppose to.

I assure you I'm not some troller. I'll even send you a pic of my car. And I'm 21 who paid for this car my self. It's been like 20-30 mins since this incident and the smell is still coming from where I said it was. I just thought this website would help me figure this out.

oh okay then, just don't fail at launching too much, you will destroy your clutch and tranny and transfer case, practice on a beater honda or something first. never dump clutch. and that smell, its burnt clutch, it will go away in a week or so if you keep driving it. You need to practice controlling your clutch engagement first. practice a few 40 roll racing up to 100 to get the hang of it, then go into doing digs. you could cost your self a lot of money if you don't be careful, its a brand new $40k car. go easy on it.

in my opinion though, I never do digs, its just too harsh on the car. look up on youtube evo 9 fail, and you'll see an evo 9 who busted his transfer case by doing continuous 5000rpm clutch dumps. you need at least stage 3 clutch to be able to do continuous digs and not worry much. stock clutch is weak.

How many tracks do 40 roll races? I ask because I know that that's what you meant, but am worried that there might not be such a track near the thread-starter.

To the thread-starter: you cooked your clutch. Maybe it will be OK. Just drive like a human for a while. If the RPMs ever zoom up without the car accelerating, which is most likely to happen in 4th and 5th, then brace yourself for a large expense.

Like how much are we talking here lol. And how much do stage 3 go for? And thanks for the info guys. Really appreciate it. I remember the smell from my first manual car when I ****ed up. And I won't try to launch again lol. I'm not trying to **** this car up. I'm already broke as it is because of this car. But it's definitely worth it.

Definitely burnt clutch smell. Nothing to really worry about yet, just drive it normal for awhile. Idk the prices on the x but some of the tougher clutches for the 8/9 are easily over $1k just in parts. But there is only one way to learn lol

Lol that's definitely true. But I think I'm a little scared to learn hahahaha. But 1k doesn't sound too bad. Just don't want it to be over 5k lol. Then that's bad :(

Burnt clutch is better than a broken transmission. Go easy on it and don't feel bad, launching an awd car takes practice.

Sounds like a good offer. I'd take it up if I were you Kidkuda35, it might save you some $$$ in the long run.

I honestly would but I'm in Parris Island South Carolina so I doubt I'd be able to come up :(

I'm kinda confused to so if u let it slip u burn the clutch and if u dump it to break something else. How hard is it to really launch this thing?! I want to try it someday but I'm at 55k original clutch so it'll probably be when I'm ready to replace it.

Let me fix it for you; then it will make more sense.

If you let it slip too long, you burn the clutch; but if you dump it, you break something else.
