Ticking noise, haven't seen or heard of this before.

Hey guys bought my car in 2011, after storing it this winter fired it up for the first time and immediately after the car warmed up I noticed this very strange tick whenever I give it any type of gas. Very loud and noticeable tick with windows rolled up, very frustrating as it gets louder and ticks quicker as the revs get higher. :thumbdown

if the car sat a while, maybe one or more of your lifters got stuck. is it coming from under the valve cover? i can't view vids from work.
it's not the injectors, correct?

How is your oil pressure---do you have a gauge?

Buguy Mar 18, 2015 08:37 PM

I don't have an oil pressure guage and car seemed to do this before i put it away too but not as noticeable .

I think it is probably oil pump noise.
Start from getting your oil changed and see if it changes..

I think yours is a bit extreme.
When did you change your oil last time?

I believe even if you don't drive, you are still supposed to change oil frequently..
3months or 3k for me.

Let it run for good of 30 min to let oil circulated. When oil settle for awhile liquid become thicken.Changed the motor oil.

kaj Mar 19, 2015 09:02 AM

common oil change frequency is 6mos or the recommended mileage, whichever comes first. letting your car sit a few months isn't going to hurt it.

meckert Mar 19, 2015 10:59 AM

Ok, so run some motor flush in it---READ the directions---change the oil. If you cant find any, try running some trans fluid in with the oil at IDLE ONLY for maybe 10min, the noise should fade away , this will free up any sludge and unstick a lifter if its stuck. Do NOT drive with any of these in your oil---change the oil. You should be done then.

^ is that actually safe? I've heard of some people doing this but I feel like its nothing a more common treatment of something like Seafoam in the oil for a few miles can't also fix.

hoobastnk90 Mar 19, 2015 12:53 PM

i would think sometimes broken up gunk is more dangerous than gunk that has been stuck on a long time. i would just change the oil first and go from there.

Interesting if the trans fluid thing works. That would be a good thing to know.

I dont hear a tick but I do hear the oil pump. Normal for Evo X's.

^yes, this is safe.

The Seafoam in the oil is the same procedure. Do not drive with it in. Just idle and drain ;) The engine won't 'blow up' but you accelerate wear with thin oil not reaching pressures and 'sticking' to things like cylinder walls...

Good Lord---Thank you. You all need to remember the trans fluid is actually a lube for the trans as well---a lube none the less. Its high detergent and there fore breaks down a lot of sludge--. This is an old school way of freeing up lifters-- and yep I am old school. Under non circumstances I wouldnt recommend something I "heard" or didn't have first hand knowledge of it working. Hell I gave specific instructions.
