DIY: Transmission Fluid Change (EVO X 5 speed Manual)
1.Get all your necessary parts together. The following is what I used:
a. 3 Quarts of AMSOIL GL4 (use whatever you’d like)
b. 1 Drain plug washer – Mitsubishi Part # MN130495
c. 1 Fill plug washer – Mitsubishi Part # MF660036
d. 24 mm socket (for drain plug)
e. 17 mm socket (for fill plug)
f. Torque wrench
g. Flat head screw driver (for removing plastic push tabs)
h. Fluid pump to fill new transmission fluid
Note: The washers are not really necessary – Mitsubishi service guide recommends that it be replace each time transmission fluid is replaced. I did it just to be safe but I know there are lots of people that don’t and have no issues. They are just a flat type alloy washers. Also – it does take a while to fill 2.6 quarts with a small hand pump. Lots of people have just run a small line
down to the fill hole from the engine bay – I may do it this way next time.
3 Quarts of your favorite Trans Fluid – but these AMSOIL’s are great!
These are the new drain and fill plug. I replaced mine but many have had no issues reusing the original.
Cheap fluid filler. They cost about $9 to $10 at any auto parts store.
Fluid pump attached to the bottle
2.Take the car out for a short drive to warm up the fluids. It drains a lot better that way.
3.Raise car up. It’s best to do the draining and filling while the car is level. If you have an access to a lift – that would be perfect. I did not and I ended up raising all four corners and putting them on jack stands. You can also do it raising the fronts only but you’ll probably have to raise them to start the draining and then lower to finish draining and raise to replace the plug, etc…

4.Crawl under the car and remove the protective skid plate that covers the engine/transmission/oil pan etc. It’s one large piece and entirely held on by plastic push tabs. Please note, that you do not have to remove the front portion that holds the bottom of the front bumper.
The skid plate removed. They are held in place by 21 push tabs. The picture above has the oil/oil filter access panels removed. You do not need to remove those.
5.Locate the Transmission and the drain and fill plugs. The transmission is located next to the front left wheel (right next to the center frame member).
Shot from underneath…
6.The drain plug is the one located on the bottom. It’s big and flat. Locate this plug and use the 24 mm socket – or wrench and remove it. Have your oil pan ready.
Transmission fluid draining.
7.While it’s draining, clean off the drain plug – you will probably notice quite a bit of metal particles stuck to it. At least I did…
Right after removal… Nice and dirty
After some clean up and new washer
8.After fluid has completely drained, clean off the area with a clean towel and reinstall the drain plug. Torque to 24 ft-lbs.
9.Remove the fill plug; clean the area and the plug.
10.Insert the pump hose into the fill hole and fill until you get a bit of a spill over. The correct fill level is just below the level of the fill hole so you can slowly fill it until you see some flow back out. The official amount per service guide is 2.6 quarts. And my third bottle was a little under half when I saw the oil come back out so amount seems accurate.
11.Once all the dripping has stopped from the fill hole, clean the area and install the cleaned fill plug (along with new washer). The filler plug should also be torque to 24 ft-lbs.
Filler plug – cleaned with new washer in place. Also, the filler plug says “oil” on it – that might help you locate it.
12.Reinstall the skid plate and the 21 push rivets and lower the car.
13.DONE!!!

Great write up! Couple of questions-
1. Was the drain plug magnetic? I was planning on looking for one, but if it is that would save me the time.
2. Were do you get the amsoil from? Any special place or any auto store. Never really for it before.
3. Did the shifting feel any different?
Thanks

2. I got the AMSOIL right here. Contact Andy apagan01 and he can take your order. Great product and great vendor.
3. Yes, you will notice a difference. Especially if you suffer from gear grinding on cold start ups.
