Cusco Rear diff install
#16
HA! Me too. My idiot local dealer just told me that I'd have to order the entire rear diff.

Yeah, it looks like the US catalog is missing it. Weird.
Here's a diagram with part numbers:

Allow me to chime in with a chart.
It looks like to install the Cusco 1.5-way rear LSD, we need the AYC-compatible LSD itself (p/n LSD 452 L15) and two side bearings (p/n MB393957). Let me know if this is correct.
I also wonder what is the most ideal setup for autocross. Keep the stock front open diff (risk of diff failure because it's weak)? Use a Cusco 1.5-way front LSD too (p/n LSD 454 C15 or LSD 453 C15)? Or some other choices like the recently popular Wavetrac ATB front LSD?

Any info on how Evo performs the best? Open diff front and rear, LSD rear, or LSD front and rear?

I also heard that Quaife and Wavetrac front LSDs are much stronger than the stock front diff, which is prone to blow up when autocrossing. Not sure if the Quaife and Wavetrac front diffs are truly much stronger though.

So thanks to Mert at GST, I got my Cusco RS 1.5way rear diff installed.
Attachment 315151
So like any diff install, you gotta get those half-shafts and drive shaft out of the way first. Disconnect the AYC lines, 3 bolts, and the diff comes right out. After that, you unbolt the side of the pumpkin that houses the rear diff.
Attachment 315152
Then you just slide the old diff off, unbolt the main gear around it, and transfer that gear to your cusco diff.
Attachment 315153
You can attempt to transfer the old side bearings too (the ring of bearings on the top of pic 2), but that's definitely not something for the timid. It's better and safer just to buy new ones.
After that, you just bolt everything back together and put the housing back in place. Put new SVG fluid in the diff part, ATF SPIII in the AYC part, and then bleed the lines. Thankfully, I was able to use the new application from Tephra to do that part.

never mind, i see it's covered here: MB393957 (same for 8s, 9s, 10s)
What is MB393956, the differential pinion bearing? do I need one of those to install a new diff also?

Pinion bearings don't need replaced when replacing the diff carrier. However, you will need check and possibly reset carrier bearing preload and the back lash for the ring and pinion gears. This is not exactly a DIY job.
