A-Pillar fabrication Pictures

Just a few pics of the A-pillar I started on Friday. Needs a bit more sanding and more coats of duplicolor. The color does not quite match. Wife suggested I paint all the pillars!

First batch of bondo dried to fast. Just had to do more sanding.

I know this is not complete more sanding to come! This may not be some peoples preference for location of the gauges, but this is where I wanted to put them. Not absolutely professional, but I'm working on it!

Where did you get the pods from? Part # and what size gauges do they fit? Not to bad, I like this idea more and more, I would have glassed them, not sure the bondo will hold. I also would consider covering the SRS logo up, I think it looks tacky, JMO.

Pep boys had the pods. 52 mm. Hot glued them down 1st, then bondo. Hope it holds. Not to much flexing in this area of the car. Didn't want to attempt fiberglass, didn't wont to learn how on this car, but may try with sub-box!

Very nice job.

THEMEMPHISFORCE Feb 21, 2009 06:34 AM

Okay that tells me where you got it, but who makes it. Also cost?

Td66 Feb 21, 2009 06:39 AM

APC(american products company) 29.00$
Pep-boys by my house only had 2 styles available 2 and 3 pod. No other brand offered there.
I did have to take a dremmel with cutting disc to it, but did not have to do any forming.

Silver06evo9mr Feb 21, 2009 06:41 AM

if u can get it perfect color matched. ill buy one off ya :)

THEMEMPHISFORCE Feb 21, 2009 06:42 AM

WOW, I didn't know ppl even still had APC products, that company has been gone for years. I am going to go by Pep boys tonight and see what I can find.

Well done! Thought about doing that myself but I'm too scared. I guess if I mess it up, the price for a new A-pillar from Mitsubishi shouldn't be that much. Might have to give this a shot.

Td66 Feb 21, 2009 08:23 AM

Sure you can. Just take your time, no rushing between sanding and paint coats. I used 60, 150, 200, 220, 400 grit sandpaper. How bout those Cowboys!

THEMEMPHISFORCE Feb 21, 2009 08:55 AM

How about those Steelers.

I never thought of the idea, good job. Yeah i'd say just a bit more filling and sanding and you've got yourself a unique part. After molding in my mustang's body kit, this ought to be a cakewalk.
I probably would go with fiberglass strip/resin or long strand fiberglass reinforced body filler to be on the safe side, but like you said, it's not much of a flexing point (unless you keep taking it on and off) so you can probably get away with that.
