Hide-Away License Plate Frame (Pictures & Video)

I've been without a front plate in NJ for about 8 months with no problems. In the past few weeks, I've been stopped and given warnings twice by the local PD, so I decided it was time for a solution. It admittedly doesn't look as great as I anticipated, especially for the ridiculous $180 I paid for it. I'm lowered on Eibach springs and the frame is really close to the ground. I haven't had any scraping while driving, but I've scraped the frame on driveways and pulling out of parking lots already (this was with the plate up, it probably would have been destroyed if it was flipped down). It's only a matter of time before the license plate falls off, but I really don't want to drill the bumper...

Two holes had to be drilled on the bottom of the bumper for the base. Instead of drilling into the frame for the supporting rod, I put a screw through an existing hole in the fog light housing. We installed it on the driver side so that we only had to remove that 1/3 of the undertray. I might modify the undertray and put it back on, but for the time being it's removed.

EDIT: chaotichoax and I just wired the motor and she's up and running. Video:

Not sure if I can post direct links to non-vendor sites, but I bought it from the guys here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1zIG...layer_embedded

$60 for non-motorized, $180 for motorized. In retrospect, I would have gotten the cheaper one.

That is very nice.. Awesome job on the creativity and install.. Very clean.. But I feel like you have to worry to much about clearances.. One day your going to put it up and its going to be gone lol.. Good luck with it..

Nice, I love it.
I was just looking for this, Specially kick ass position :)

Nice Mike. Looks solid. I actually like the placement as well. It is what I would do if I had to have a front bumper plate.

LOL very amusing! (Now you see me now you don't!) Great install!

hksevoix May 9, 2009 01:49 PM

haha that's cool, just be cautious over speedbumps and driveways, that plate is pretty low

GPTourer May 9, 2009 02:01 PM

That's neat. I've heard of them, but never seen one installed. When it was motorized, how long did it take to go from hidden to upright?

macPSU May 9, 2009 02:29 PM

Thanks for the comments everyone. ^As for when it was motorized...unfortunately we never got that far, haha. We never got power to it before we broke the fusible link, I'll post a video in action once I have the replacement part. If you check out the link I posted a few posts above, there's a video of it on a GT-R. I'd say it takes about 3 seconds to flip up or fold down.

Ha, I'd love to get pulled over and the officer say "I pulled you over because you don't have a front license."
*flips switch*
"Uhm, yes I do, see?"
