How to Install MoleSkins tint protection in your Evo X

HOW TO: Install MoleSkins tint protection in your Evo X

Parts Required:
- MoleSkins tint protection
can be obtained at http://www.tintprotector.com/mitsubishi/index.htm

Tools Required:
- Phillips screw driver to remove door panel screws.
- thin flat head screw driver
- very sharp knife
- scissors
- fine grit sand paper
- rubbing alcohol
- lint free cloth

Recommended Number of People
- 1 person

Difficulty
- 2, hard part is un-clipping the door covers

Time to complete
- 1 hour taking your time. I have this down to 30 minutes now.

Step by Step Instructions

1) You get the mole skin in one long roll, measure it against your windows and cut it into four pieces. Two long ones for the front windows and two shorter ones for the rear windows.

2) The mole skins are pre-cut width wise, take your four pieces, bend them in half then cut them in half the entire length.

3) Go the your EvoX open the driver door and roll down the window.

4) Take the tweeter in the door and pull the top towards you and then up.

5) Remove the three plastic covers over the screws using a very small flathead screw driver.

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l3...l/P1060816.jpg

6) Once the three screws are undone simply pull the upper edge of the panel towards you, ensure you grab the panel and not the window liner.

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l3...l/P1060817.jpg

7) Lift up the window liner from behind the panel, it sits on a fine edge and comes out rather easily.

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l3...l/P1060819.jpg

8) Very gently sand down the side of the window liner that you will attach the moleskins too, then wipe clean with rubbing alcohol and a lint free cloth and let dry for a few minutes.

9) SLOWLY and CAREFULLY Stick on the precut moleskins to the two edges of the window liner, ensuring that the mole skins DO NOT HANG over the upper edge of the window liner. Trim the moleskins to fit the length of the window liner, then carefully apply pressure to the moleskin making sure the glue has correct contact. (STEP 9 is the most important part of the entire install, time and patience are of the essence here.)

10) Re-install the window liner with the new moleskin tint protector back onto its edge and squish the door panel back onto the liner making sure the clips behind the panel snap into place.

11) These two clips from the upper panel may pop out, tuck them back up over the lower panel.

15) Once the screws are out, gently pry towards you the upper part of the door panel away from the window liner.

16) With the panel pried away with one hand, lift up and out the window liner with the other.

17) SLOWLY and CAREFULLY Stick on the precut moleskins to the two edges of the window liner, ensuring that the mole skins DO NOT HANG over the upper edge of the window liner. Trim the moleskins to fit the length of the window liner, then carefully apply pressure to the moleskin making sure the glue has correct contact. (STEP 17 is the most important part of the entire install, time and patience are of the essence here.)

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l3...l/P1060840.jpg

18) Re-insert the newly protected window liner back into its edge behind the door panel. Ensure its tightly seated on the edge and against the panel.

19) Re-tighten the three screws and replace the screw covers.

20) Repeat for the passenger side and enjoy scratch free windows. ALLOW GLUE TO DRY 12H before using windows.

unless there's something wrong with the evo this is completely unnecessary. i've had a bunch of other cars with tint and friends too that have zero issues with scratching tint with putting windows up an down.

with all that being said.....you did a really nice write up on it, very detailed and great pics

yeah man my ting was scratched to sheet within two weeks. I had to do this.

Thanks for the compliments :)

yeah i had the same issue and I did this a while back, I had streak scratches from where the windows went up/down and more where the window rested at the top seal. I did some light sanding to the upper seal, applied the moleskin and had the windows re-tinted. Its been about 3 months since, up/down steaks are gone, top seal scratches continue. Scratches with this car and tint are inevitable. Hopefully moleskin is all you need, good luck.

Yeah, The very top seal, where the top of the window rolls up into.

LOL This may sound like a dumb question but is it ok to roll your windows up after install?

yes but leave them rolled up for a few days for the glue on the mole skins to settle.

I did mine this winter and the glue is all over my window. i took my time, cut the felt in half very carefully, and did not roll my windows down for almost two weeks. I have no scratches, but a crap load of glue that doesn't like to come off.

robyn402 Mar 19, 2011 07:39 PM

my RA has got this issue bad, been putting off doing this myself but then i got to thinking instead of putting moleskin on the trim piece at the bottom of the window why not just cut off the portion you applied moleskin to, that way theres nothing pressing on the window

flnsx Mar 22, 2011 08:16 PM

Just use the Tint Protector Lancer kit. Don't cut anything off or you will get rattles, wind noise, water intrusion et et.

jig for cutting moleskin.
