A LOT. Without studs there isn't much the car can do on glass ice like that. At one end of the lake (Ghost lake for those in the Calgary area) they have a little snowcross course set up that you can go rip through, there is some snow there, so there is a lot better traction.

What you don't see is the 8 pickup trucks on the ice behind me when I took that picture. I've been on frozen lakes every winter since I was a kid, you learn to trust the ice. Not that you have to trust much, it is insanely thick. Sometimes you can hear the ice cracking, if it's a big one it sounds like thunder ripping across the lake... That's always a bit disconcerting, but I've never had a problem. Getting onto the lake without ripping the bumper off was the scary part. Treated the car to some low since taking that pic, so probably won't be able to do this again next year
