Tinting Laws?
You're not supposed to have any tints up front in IL... I learned that the hard way. I have 35% up front and 20 in the back. It all depends on the city too... some cops don't care. City cops usually don't care.. cops in the suburbs usually do. So.. pick your poison if you get them
I believe tinting the lights is illegal nationwide. It's generally considered a safety hazard once you start modding the lights. Suburb cops will ticket you at least once a month for illegal tinting. And believe me, if you live in an area where they do care it's not worth having at all. $55 a month is $660 a year.
Apparently they amended this numerous times. If you have any of the following medical conditions then it is all good in the hood to have tints.
systemic or discoid lupus erythematosus, disseminated superficial actinic porokeratosis, albinism, retinitis pigmentosa
Otherwise the law in IL is here.

Thanks for the follow up replies guys. Okay, I finally found the actual Illinois Vehicle Code Laws thanks to a poster on another forum. The gov doesn't make this stuff easy to find that's for sure. The relevant info on headlights and taillights is in the Lights and Lamps section. What is interesting is that there is nothing in there prohibiting tinting. Only a definition for visibility.

(b) All other motor vehicles shall exhibit at least 2 lighted head lamps, with at least one on each side of the front of the vehicle, which satisfy United States Department of Transportation requirements, showing white lights, including that emitted by high intensity discharge (HID) lamps, or lights of a yellow or amber tint, during the period from sunset to sunrise, at times when rain, snow, fog, or other atmospheric conditions require the use of windshield wipers, and at any other times when, due to insufficient light or unfavorable atmospheric conditions, persons and vehicles on the highway are not clearly discernible at a distance of 1000 feet. Parking lamps may be used in addition to but not in lieu of such head lamps. Every motor vehicle, trailer, or semi‑trailer shall also exhibit at least 2 lighted lamps, commonly known as tail lamps, which shall be mounted on the left rear and right rear of the vehicle so as to throw a red light visible for at least 500 feet in the reverse direction, except that a truck tractor or road tractor manufactured before January 1, 1968 and all motorcycles need be equipped with only one such tail lamp.
----------------------------------------------
So there you have it, 1000 feet in the front 500 in the rear. Of course, none of this stops cops from pulling you over and hassling you about tints or even writing a ticket that you need to fight in court. That's a different story.

Oh really? That's funny because I thought there were thousands of court cases everyday with people debating the interpretation of the law. You sound like a jackass trying to be a know it all. Stay out of my threads. This Article should help you with your imaginary superiority complex.

If you tint spray you can go as dark as you want, and it looks real good. If u want some pictures I can show ya some. Your also able to use the tint on windows wich looks like real smoked glass.
Well, in the case of VLT, yes.
To play devil's advocate, there's also the inverse scale which is called "opacity".
Whereas VLT is the % transmission of visible light through the glass, opacity is the % visible light blocked by the glass. I think that a lot of factory-tinted glass is specified in opacity.
But, yeah, in general tinting applied as film is usually given by VLT.
(BTW, I took the original post you were referring to-the Civic- as a joke.

I've done some searching online and it's hard to find anything definite. Most of the opinions I can find just say that if you're unlucky to get a bored cop on a bad day you might get a fix-it ticket, but other than that, you might be ok.
