How crucial are mud flaps?
I've read a few places that mud flaps should be one of the first things I get for my Evo, but all those posts are old and very very few and far between. I have a ton up upgrades/fixing to do and only a limited budget (new fuel injectors, SST cooling, etc), so I'm just wondering hoqw high on the priority list a $130 set of mud flaps should be.

A lot of people recommend them because how wide the car is in the rear. So when rocks get kicked up it will hit in front of the tire. With that said I don't have them because they are not my style.

I would put them on only if your car is brand new. If it's a few years old and hasn't had them, it's probably gonna be too little too late, damage is done. Probably easier to get the skirts resprayed, and then add the protecting clear film.
A big factor is also the offset of the wheels. When mine was stock is wasn't that bad, but still evident. But as soon as I put 20mm spacers all around, the front wheels fling dirt along the entire length of the car almost. Covers the front and back door up to the back wheel, like 1/3 way up the door. Mud flaps would be beneficial for me in this case, but for me personally: a) I am not a fan of the look and b) with 140k on the body and paint, it's the least of my worries.
A car that's driven and enjoyed is going to get battle scars, that's just the truth.

I really like mine and never looked back. I just wanted them for style points but it made a noticeable difference on how much brake dust got on my car (my car is WW).
But "crucial"? not at all. Just go by if you like the look or if you don't.

it does do a job. Specially if you running wider wheels/tires or a lesser off set.
this set up on the picture is 18-9.5 with +22 off set and 265' Toyo RRR's
I loved the white flaps / but rallyarmor didn't ever made it to production because it would cost no kidding double of the price and gets yellow about in 2 years...
Although it looked gorgeous on the white car in my opinion.
