I do not think it is springs - my mate changed out his spings the other day on his EvoXgsr and it still does it...
Well it's likely in the spring/strut combination as many seemed to have "fixed" the issue with coilovers which replaces both.

more specific? year after year cheaper parts on cars. nissans have this problem 2 with those kyb struts. just remove the strut from the spring and shake the shaft or piston and u would see what i meaning.

oh ok.

so the strut itself has internal parts that are loose?

I could believe it is in the coilover strut. My Gsxr sounded similar after I got the front forks revalved. Upon inspection the mid valve had worked loose and was making the clunking sound when rapidly going from compression to rebound....

I am going to replace the springs on my car and install sway bars in a few weeks. Wil try to make a before and after video / sound recording FTW.

awesome that would be good!

Yeah springs aren't terribly complicated, but maybe replacing them stops the shock bottoming out OR moving in a particular way...

Bump stops..remove from front struts = noise gone.

well if its hitting the bump stops then stiffer springs will reduce the noise... since stiffer springs wont allow the strut to compress as much..

is that logic ok?

i would think that they compress more, they already start more compressed than stock. Plus some springs say to trim the bumpstop.....

Tephra, I think it is a close run thing - lowering the car makes it closer to the stops but with stiffer progressive springs it stiffens more per mm of suspension travel....

On a possibly related and rather annoying issue my car developed a really annoying creaking / cracking sound (sounded grim, I thought that something serious was going wrong) with the front right strut which manifested itself initially as a noise over bumps and then developed into the same noise with steering input.

This started at about 8000 miles.

Upon further investigation (much looking over the suspension) we noticed that the front right bump stop was showing wear on the outer periphery. I could not believe this could be the source of the grim creaking noise but I gave it a grease up anyway (used chain lube from the bike chain) and took it for a drive.

Unbelievably the simple bump stop (looks like it is made from high density poly or similar) was making the awful noise and with a bit of grease the issue was relieved.

But, even with it greased it did not stop the knocking noise over speed bumps.

yeh I know what you mean about travel vs spring rate.

hopefully this weekend i will have time to rip the wheel off and check it out properly...
