Squeal shields necessary?

Hi all,

I upgraded to Hawk performance brake pads and reused the oem squeal shields. I am getting a LOT of grinding and the car has only 17k miles on it. It's not a squeak, it's a metal on metal very loud grind when braking. Can anyone let me know if perhaps I wasn't supposed to use the OEM squeal shields?

If they fit, they are fine to use.
