Spring Rate Chart for Evo X

I think it's time to start a sticky on all the different Springs and Coilovers out there for the Evo X. If you have any additions or corrections, please post here and I or a moderator will update the stats. I'm starting to add in a "Street Price" which is an approximate average of prices seen with a basic google search and may not be 100% accurate. Just keep in mind that sometimes you get what you pay for and the lowest price vendors may or may not include the same (or any) support after the sale when it comes to tuning your suspension.

Thank you for putting in the time to do this.
Not a problem, will be fun to see what is out there for our X's this way and have it in a central place. :D

It may be a rough guide as to what to expect but I'm on the fence about how easy it will be to keep updated. Plus different vendors will be discounting them at all kinds of percentages making the retail prices hard to compare.

I was also thinking for the Coilovers we could possibly post an adjustable range of ride height like:

+1.0" to -2.3" / +1.2" to -2.1"

Obviously the optimal settings are not going to be the maximum slam but some want the range for car shows and then return them to realistic ride heights for driving. I would imagine that rally drivers may actually raise the ride height as well. Trouble is getting that kind of info for all the coilovers and still be somewhat accurate. I guess I could leave that column listed as "adjustable" unless we get the numbers for that coilover.

Hiboost Aug 19, 2008 01:55 PM

I did some searching on Eibach Pro spring rates and found the numbers above quoted. They seem in line with being about +30% stiffer than stock, but progressive for front as well as the rear.

Hiboost Aug 21, 2008 04:45 AM

I haven't seen HKS springs or coilovers available for the Evo X yet. If you or anyone else finds some stats and where to buy I'll update the chart.

I put in the Robispec KW Streets, no idea on the stats though.

Hiboost Sep 7, 2008 08:42 AM

Added Damping column to Coilovers.

Corrected some specs for Tanabe GF210 Springs and Zeal Coilovers.

Added in Tein Springs and Coilovers to the list.

Still could use the stock spring rates for the Evo X MR.

Tractionlimit Sep 8, 2008 04:11 PM

This may be a dumb question, but why is every coilover at least twice the stock spring rate? Are we comparing apples to apples when looking at the spring rate of a traditional spring kit vs. coilover? Do coilovers ride that much more harshly, and would something like Eibach be a realistic option for the track?

Thanks.

The spring rates are measured the same way on Lowering Springs as well as Coilovers. The biggest difference is that Lowering Springs are limited by what spring rates they can use if they are going to be used properly with the stock OEM shocks. Typically you will only see 10-30% increased spring rates and often progressive rate springs will minimize the impact on how much of that you feel in daily driving. If the spring rates are too high they will wear out the shock faster and could actually hurt the handling of the car if the shocks can't control them properly.

Coilovers can get away with higher spring rates because they also include upgraded adjustable dampers that allow you to tune them to the spring rates depending on what kind of ride you want. Most will adjust for compression and rebound where a softer setting will be a bit easier on the street to a point and stiffer settings are more for smooth race tracks. Going too far in either direction of adjustment in relation to the spring rate will make the car ride as if it's out of balance. If the settings from front to rear are not tuned to each other properly you can also get that porpoise effect where the whole car oscilates out of balance front to rear.

A well setup coilover combo doesn't always have to be harsher on the street, but if the roads are really rough you would definitely feel the increased spring rates and firmer ride. Where Coilovers really shine is on a relatively smooth race track where weight transfer on a good setup is precise and predictable when compared to the OEM springs and shock combo that often lets the car roll too far for crisp handling.

I'm no suspension guru by any means and this is just what I've read over the years. Perhaps we can get someone with first hand knowledge to add to that as I didn't really find any good links that talk about the differences when I did a quick google search. :)

Hiboost Sep 17, 2008 07:20 AM

Added info for Eibach Pro-Street, HKS Hipermax III, and HKS Hipermax III Sport Coilovers.

Why is the rear end lowered more compared to the front on most springs? Its obvious that the front end has more wheel gap.

Hiboost Oct 28, 2008 04:18 PM

That's a good question, it may have to do with the clearance to the body and greater suspension travel in the front. Considering if you turned the wheel to it's most extreme angle and hit a bump you wouldn't want it to hit your body panels. Might be more of a carryover from the rally days since the last time I saw extremely lowered cars at the road course there were cars with 1/2" of wheel gap and no allowance for hitting a bump with the wheel turned.

Stance changed their spring rate on GR+ from 10k/10k to 10k/9k, just FYI
Cool, I'll update the chart!

Chris, are you still liking your Eibachs compared to stock? Any plans on going to a coilover setup? Any loss of performance or bouncing with that initial softer spring rate? Thanks again for the great info.
For being only lowering springs I've found they are quite good compared to when I installed just lowering springs on my 96 Eclipse GSX. This is likely due to the fact that the stock suspension and shocks are much better than those Eclipse parts back in the day. The Eibachs are predictable on the roadcourse and the slightly more compliant initial spring rate seems fine for street driving. I'm going to upgrade 275/30-19 tires on 19x9.5" wheels and see how the overall package feels before deciding on coilovers, so far for my needs the car already handles quite good and is very forgiving. Getting a stiffer rear antiroll bar in the back also seemed to balance the car to a more neutral state over the slight understear the car had stock.

leecavturbo Feb 13, 2009 10:07 AM

why does the eibach's have a range of rates?
does it mean available special order?

Hiboost Feb 15, 2009 11:38 PM

They have a Progressive Spring Rate so initial spring rate for small bumps is actually less than stock and as it compresses it will feel stiffer.

kidneythief13 Feb 23, 2009 11:11 AM

I believe I found the rear spring rate for the X MR here: http://sccaforums.com/forums/thread/333415.aspx (post 339863?)

Of course we rated the OEM rear springs (some goofy tapered/progressive Eibach spring). It was variable rate 160-215 #/in...
So, that would be ~2.86-3.84 (rear)

Maybe someone wants to double check & add to the OP?

smgevo Feb 26, 2009 08:59 PM

Hiboost, could you also add to your list the various adjustability levels to each coilover design, ie; Single adjustable (rebond only), Single dual adjustable (compression and rebound adjusted together with one knob), Dual (compression and rebound adjusted independently), Triple (compression high and low and rebound)

Hiboost Feb 28, 2009 08:54 PM

I'll see if I can sort out the info tomorrow, any missing bits I'll call out and see what others can find. :P

Hiboost Apr 11, 2009 12:28 PM

For roads in decent condition they are actually slightly softer riding than stock or the same. If you visit extreme pot holes or speed bumps you will definitely feel the stiffer side of them though. The progressive nature of them means they really only have higher than stock springs rates when doing extreme cornering or hitting sharp bumps in the road.

Sorry new to this stuff :(

I went with the Eibach but they are at the limits for the amount of drop and are about as stiff as you would want to go with the stock shocks. I even had to trim the front rubber lip on my Aero kit because I was scraping it on everything. If you don't want as much drop the Swift Sport Mach seem like a really good bet to me.

bbkg79 May 2, 2009 06:12 AM

Good morning everyone, I read through the whole thread but I'm still unclear as to why some lowering springs for example:

Works .9" .................... 3.8 kg* .......... 3.2 - 4.3 kg* ........ 0.9" / 0.9"

have a broad range (3.2 - 4.3 kg*) of rate? How come it's not a set rate like the front for instance?

Jblade May 2, 2009 01:11 PM

^ the ones with ranges are progressive spring rates, meaning they get stiffer the more that they're compressed

Hiboost Oct 24, 2009 08:46 AM

Did a few updates, if anyone has new springs or coilovers to add to the list let us know. If there is more info I should be adding to the charts it's just a matter of getting the data for all the products.

BigT Dec 8, 2009 02:41 PM

The Eibach coilover springsrates seem to be off according to GTWorx and his add in the vendor section.

Unless ofcourse, GTworx is offering their own rates.

EDIT:

I called Eibach to ask about their ProStreet coilover setup and the front spring rate is 350 and the rear has NOT been developed yet.

So around a 6.3 kg front spring rate and likely similar or slightly lower in the rear?

I guess we will have to wait for final stats.

Hiboost Dec 18, 2009 07:57 AM

Ok I spent some time doing a bit more research and found a good 5-6 more coilover setups available for the Evo X. If anyone knows of others including the high end setups feel free to post or PM me the details and I'll update the list. Some of the stats are still foggy such as height adjustment range and damping adjustments type but it should still give you a good start on what setups are out there.

Street price ranges are bound to change often so use those as a loose guide only to get an idea if they will fit into your budget. As is often the case, you get what you pay for!

BigT Jan 14, 2010 11:05 AM

I just got off the phone with H&R USA and they said they don't release any spring rate numbers for the Sport Springs line. However, she said they are at least 20 to 25% stiffer than stock.

I'm pretty sure you can request any spring combos you want and they will valve the shocks for you. If there are some standard numbers that they recommend I have yet to find a link to them but I guess I could ask Ryan Gates. They are definitely top notch coilovers although not in everyone's budget.

Springs ...................... Front Rate ........ Rear Rate ...... Front/Rear Drop ...... Street Price
Swift Sport Mach ........ 2.7 - 4.3 kg ...... 2.3 - 4.4 kg .......... 1.0" / 0.6" ................. $350
Tein S-Tech .................... 4.2 kg ............... 3.8 kg ............... 1.4" / 1.0" ................ $220

Noob question, since the S-Techs have a higher spring rate. Does that mean it's a stiffer ride than the Swift Springs?

BigT Apr 13, 2010 06:22 AM

The tein's do not have a higher spring rate, rather a steady rate where as the swift's are progressive. The swifts start off softer but can get stiffer than the tein's as the springs compresses. In other words, they are soft during cruising and hard when you hit the corners.

Hiboost Apr 14, 2010 10:04 AM

The whole progressive spring thing is a bit hard to pin down. Basically on smooth roads the lower spring rates mean the factory shocks control the springs just fine, not that it's a challenge on a smooth road! On moderate bumpy roads the spring rates are probably slightly high for the shocks but within limits so it's mostly decent handling and response. Get onto a bumpy road and you get spikes of higher spring rates kicking in that are uncontrollable for several bounces by the stock shocks and you can get that bouncy feeling.

That's one of the major reasons I finally moved to coilovers since they have linear spring rates and adjustable shocks is much more predictable versus progressive springs and non-adjustable shocks.

Interesting - Espelir ASD springs for the Evo X. Rear is lower than front - doesn't sound good right off the bat!

One more for the list!!!

Progress also makes springs for the Evo X

http://www.evoxparts.com/evoxparts/P...-X-p-525.html#

- Front drop: 1.2" (Front rate: 260 lbs/in)
- Rear drop: 0.8" (Rear rate 230 lbs/in)

I am guessing these are linear rates?

i see that with the COBB springs they advertise on lancershop too...the drop in the rear is bigger than the front...i emailed the site and asked why b/c for most springs, it's the front that offers lower drop than rear (and that's how it should be)--right?

anyway, the rep at lancershop didn't know why either...lol

From what I understand the Evo is somewhat raked from the factory. Swift and Works do not alter this rake and from everything I have read, the rake should remain unaltered as it affects the cars handling characteristics and one reason why Swifts are so highly recommended!

Hobbitos May 18, 2010 03:48 PM

Reducing the rake is better for high speed turns. Keeps it stable. For performance reduce the rake a little if possible.

Someone posted pictures of Tein S-Techs for an Evo X and they were clearly progressives, so the chart is a tad misleading on these. And before you ask, no, I have no idea what the actual rates are.

Hiboost Jun 28, 2011 07:27 AM

Ok guys I've been slacking over the last year but have learned quite a bit more in my travels when it comes to suspensions. I intend to update the charts and will give some basic suspension tips that will give you a good starting point for setting up a car that can handle turns as well as go in a straight line.

Just an FYI, I have the Eibachs and they are lower than advertised I would say ~1.5"F/1.0"R

Indeed, when I had those springs they easily dropped the front 1.5" and it was right at the limit of how low you would want to go on the stock shocks.

GTWORX.com Aug 8, 2011 11:25 AM

The spring rates posted for our springs is incorrect. They are 300 lbs/in front and rear, which is about 5.55 kg/mm

Wow those are quite a bit stiffer, not sure where I saw the specs before, updated the chart!

Bigstakk Oct 8, 2011 12:30 PM

Side note- is the spring rate chart accurate...i noticed a few of them didn't seem right like the gtworx which my understanding they only drop it .8in F/R and the spring rates are not that stiff either...

Also, does anyone want to sell me their Works springs?

ak47m203 Dec 19, 2011 09:34 AM

to OP can you update your list with Progress spring. Top 2 spring for me GTWORX Tarmac and Progress.

GTWORX Tarmac ............ 5.5 kg ................ 5.5 kg ............. 1.2" / 1.0" ................. $299
Progress ........................ 4.6 kg ............... 4.1 kg .............. 1.2" / 0.8" ................. $190

GTWORX has a higher spring rate but can you fell it obviuosly compare to Progress? Progress is nice for that price.

Sup guys, Any info on which springs come with the Tein Monoflex coilovers? Mine are making my teeth hurt since I hit 30 years old lol and I'm going to change the springs in hopes of taking the harshness down a notch.

Also, I found out that if your coil over set up has a camber plate then you have to lubricate the spherical bearing in the center of it or it will wear out eventually causing a horrible knocking/creaking metal on metal sound.

Found this info on Maintenance and cleaning

Talked to Muellerized the other day and they told me their springs have a spring rate of 4.3kg (f)/4.4kg(r) in case the OP wants to update that on the chart

eug! Nov 28, 2012 07:39 AM

Not sure if anyone posted Hotchkis spring info but here it is:

DROP: Front: 1.5" / Rear: 1.0"
SPRING RATES: Front: 195 lb/in. / Rear: 275 lb/in.

EndlessRed Jun 19, 2013 01:15 AM

Info for Cusco Zero-1:

Spring Rates: F: 9kg/mm, 504lb/in R: 8kg/mm, 448b/in

I am wondering for the track if I should consider front/rear sway bar AND springs? I have heard that the X should be fine with just a rear sway bar upgrade. Input?

Generally just a rear sway bar is the right balance for these cars although you can do a front sway bar on the softest setting and use the stiffer settings on the rear if you use softer springs front versus rear as well. What you don't want is stiffer front springs like a some coilovers come with by default compounded with a stiff swaybar relative to the rear, absolutely makes the car handle like junk. I had the sponsors car come in like that a couple years ago and it was barely driveable on the street on bumpy roads.

As far as track worthy springs you want a moderate drop and spring rate change that won't overwhelm the stock shocks. The real answer is a good set of coilovers in the $2000 range if you are serious. If you can only go with springs right now finding some Bilstein shocks from an MR owner coupled with the Swift springs seems like a well liked combo, plus you can get the shocks re-valved if you want to choose the more aggressive spring rates and drops to really dial it in.

MR Bilsteins with GTWorx springs

I put on the GT Worx springs on my 2011 MR. The stocks shocks are seriously under damped with these springs and my car lurched and bounced around badly. The car is horrible at speed on a bumpy country road. The stock springs are better for the street IMHO.

At a smooth track where damping isn't critical I gained 4-5 seconds a lap (Watkins Glen).

IMHO Don't put these springs on unless you revalve the shocks - I think you'll be disappointed otherwise because the back road agility and speed, the things that make the Evo great, is compromised.

Revalve $120 ea = $480
Used bilsteins = $400 set
springs = $350
Total $1230

A good 2 way adjustable Ohlins is $2300. Unless you have the bilsteins already it's not a good way to go. The revalved bilsteins will be a compromise, either too stiff for the street or to soft for the track.

DeltaVee for Bilstein revalve

1) I had the rear Bilsteins revalved by Rob at DeltaVee Motorsports in Kalamazoo, MI. Great service, 2 week turn around, about $110 each including guides?, seals and a dyno chart. Very pleased. The compression damping was doubled and the rebound damping quadrupled. The rear bounciness and floating was gone and the ride actually improved in the drivers seat. With the rear better controlled the front damping seemed weak

2) I rebuilt and revalved the fronts. Again, Rob at DeltaVee did a fantastic job. The front struts had much more damping from the factory, so based on spring rates and corner weights Rob only doubled the compression and rebound damping.

For some reasons, the sort-of-new JRZ RS1 coilovers (single compression and rebound adjustability, 8 kg/mm(?) front & 9 kg/mm(?) rear for the Evo) are not listed in the chart. This is potentially a great street and entry-level track setup for those want to splurge. There is also a review (https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...it-review.html) on this forum from 2012.

Service intervals and not having dust boots / bump stops limit this kit's street usefulness and push it more towards a track setup. You'd have to get those thinks added on afterwards.

So maybe we should call Ohlins the ultimate choice for street instead, no?

Roen Jun 26, 2015 05:18 AM

Pretty much. I mean you can street the JRZ, but you'll deal with decreased performance after awhile until you decide to rebuild them.

Other people have added dust boots and bump stops to the JRZs as well.

I have a coilover setup that uses 3 party duty boots, luckily mine came with bump stops.

I don't understand why we have gsr OEM SPRING rate, but we don't have the OEM COILOVER rate ?
I thought it was 8 kg front/rear but I'm not able to confirm.

Help please
