Help...what to buy?

Ok guys, im gonna be the first to admit. Im a noob to the EVO. i currently have a Twin Turbo 300zx with 510rwhp....IM TIRED OF IT. i want something new. MR is out, it costs too much. SO, there are some dealerships around me with some 03s still on the lots....they all want 27k for em. I don't see 04s anywhere....did they send the evo over in 2004? i know i don't want the stripped rs model....definetly want the "GSR??" SO, anyone know what the 05 is gonna cost? or what should i pay for a used 03-04? what should i look for to find abuse to the car? thanks in advance as im sure ill have a few more questions.....

Hi, I'm a hard core Niassan man and Have had several Z's. Welcome.

I'm on the verge of buying an MR but I have one big concern. Several people have been complaining about their cars being flagged by Mitsubishi for little or no reason. One guy said all he had was a cold air intake and Mitsubishi dealer refused to provide service.
Anyway if you are buying a preowned 03 private owner - you may need to do a search through a dealer to see if the warranty is intact!
New 03's are still on dealer lots and should not go for more than 27,000.
04's were sent to only a few dealers and some came with leather. Hence some dealers will deny they exist.
05's are soon to be here with the all new to USA -front LSD and ACD that "drivers" are salivating over - I think will improve handling alot at the limits.

I am reading the warranty thread now trying to decide whether or not to take a chance on I am a huge Evo fan, but I'm having serious reservations about and the complaints I'm reading. Good luck.

wow, you sound exactly like me. BUT, i REALLY want either the evo or the sti....i heard the subaru people weren't MUCH better about their warranty. ive also heard that they have tranny issues and the evos have transfer case issues(what all wheel drive Mitsu hasn't, i know the 3kgt was a nightmare). i think im gonna buy the 05....for an extra 3 grand or so...its gotta be worth it. i think driving a new 03 off the lot right now is not a good idea...its gonna depreciate by 15% the minute i sign the paper. idk, by looking on the mitsu website where you can "build a evo" they charge somewhere in the neighborhood of 800 bucks for the damn strut bars...what kind of crap is that? im hoping they get some at the dealership with all the basic EVO stuff in it plus floormats....ill pay 30,049....but not any more than that. PLUS, when you buy from a private owner in GA....you don't pay taxes. thats like 2500 bucks right there....decisions decisions....on another note..know anyone that wants a hi HP Z with a fully built motor with less than 5k on it?

You'll get a buyer - but might be hard to recover what you spent on mods.

I've been waiting for this Evo for years, but I've been seeing too many complaints like this:

Yeah, im having some serious second thoughts. I have always known mitsu wasn't great.....but you would think they would have made a turn for the better. They are losing sales by the minute.

The 05 STi costs as much as the MR Evo so if your rulling out the MR due to price your probably ganna have to throw out the STi as well. The 05 Evo comes with a couple upgrades it runs slightly higher boost and has an extra 5 horsepower and 13 lb of torque (same as the MR) as far as warrentee goes it totally depends on the dealer you get it from. The dealer I bought my car from totally sucks but the one that I service my car at is great to deal with and covers things on my car without question. But as with any car company if you mod your car a lot warrentee will still be voided.

I thought nobody knew how much the MSRP was for the MR yet.

Don't get me wrong I'm looking to sell my STi for the MR, but I'm not gonna pay any more than 34k-35k out the door for it.

yeah, ive been told ~35k from several dealerships....the STi is 32.....thats 70 more bux a month....quite a bit. 3k doesn't look like much, but its quite a bit. PLUS got more bargaining power with the STi....none with the MR

I dont know the MSRP like everyone else but 35k out the door is in dreamland, on planet earth im expecting it to be 34k before destination and tax and tags on top of that.
I too wish it would be that out the door

My $0.02..

Don't worry about all the warranty hype. There is more than one dealer you can go to, and I'm sure if you had to employ a lawyer it would all be reversed (in the case of a voided warranty). But, like was allready stated, Mitsu is not the only company actively voiding warranties; so it's really a crap shoot of a) dealer, b) manufacturer, and c) who you happen to deal with. I personally bought the car knowing I was going to mod the crap out of it; so I never expected much from my warranty. Keep the mods civil and clean and you won't have any issues. You need to take a lot of the posts about warranty claims with a grain of salt, since we only know the one person's side of the story, and not the dealer's.

As far as waiting for the 05 the only real benefit, at the GSR trim level, is the front LSD. That didn't mean anything to me really so I went with the 03. I also got it out the door for under 28K with less then 30 miles on the clock! Well worth it to me.

Good luck with your purchase. If you can get a good/great deal on an 03 I would say do it!! -but that's just my opinion.
