Thought I would share what Mitsubishi dealer service stated:

"Test drove vehicle and rode with customer. Checked tran fluid levels ok. Checked all mounts for tighness-compared to other 5 speed car-trans sounds normal. Recomend more time for break in period"

Guess these means there is now a 7,700 mile break-in period. I did demonstrate this to the mechanic, he stated, "never heard that before". The dealership has been good, but at least I have this documented. I wish I would have ask what car they compared it to (probably a Lancer). Oddly, it seems to do it less now, but could be because we have had warmer weather. I suppose another noise to get used to in the cold. Still love it though!!

Sounds like the throw out bearing mine does it and so did my first Evo. When I decellerate or just sit in neutral you can hear it. But when I depress the clutch it stops. There was a TSB on my 03 and it said it is normal for the car to sound like a coffe grinder sometimes. If you search you should be able to find many many post's about this. Oh sorry to edit but it has caused no problems other than just noise so far for me. Best of luck definetly get it checked just in case

Yeah, I copied a thread I did under the thread starter within this, I was specifically searching for this clutch noise. I had a mechanic co-worker state he thought it was the TOB, but this only makes this "noise" as the cluthc is engaging on a down shift, sounds similiar to the synchros on a downshift but more audible and some vibration, the Mit. mechanic seemed to think it was syncros also. Again, more often when cold, but only when downshifting from 4-3, 3-2, and rarely 2-1. If you rev match, does not do at all. I am not viewing it as a problem, but did not think it was a bad idea to get it documented. Thanks for your help, but this noise is completely different than a grind (different from the normal synchro coffee grinder), more like an electonic humming noise (although certain it's mechanical).

My car does this also...coming from DSM's, and having done a 1000 different clutch swaps, it doesn't sound like a throwout bearing. I believe this problem is with worn syncros. Time to drop the trans, take out your 2 ton press and replace the syncros!

I have an '03 with 21k on it but it started with that noise at about 17k. First time i took it to Mitsu they said they couldnt find anything wrong and that noise was from... (wait for it, quite possibly the nominee for dumbass of the year award)... My aftermarket tires!!!! OK why would a set of BFG g-force tires make noise ONLY when downshifting. Mitsu should really do a background chech on their employees and a little training and common sense would help too. After causing a scene and questioning that service department's capabilities i took that mechanic, the service manager AND the dealer for a little spin and to everyones surprise (except mine) they amazingly determined that "something isnt right with that" and after going back into the service area they said "were sure that is a normal occurance with the evo so nothing needs to be replaced." Right, strange noises comming from a virtually new car is "normal" therefore nothing needs to be done, btw this car has never been driven on a track or been abused. Since then i have gone to another mitsu dealer and they immediately said it could be the tob or syncros even before listening to the noise. I will be taking my car there shortly and updating everyone to the outcome only problem is that this place is an hour away from me so looks like i gotta find another way home.

Is there any way we can get an audio clip of this noise so I can get a better idea of the noise your experiencing?

I have the feeling that this sound is caused by the synchros. When the fluid becomes old, it seems the syncros start making this noise, maybe the fluid needs to be changed more frequently? I will be changing my fluid to synchromesh soon, I will post an update with the results.

I have the same thing. No power loss, smooth shifting, no shavings in tranny. Sounds pretty much goes away when my car is nice and warm. I did research on this and it has been thought to be the throw out bearing. Dont feel bad about the sound. I put a new clutch in about 6k ago, and took my car to a track, and poof, here is my sound again.

I guess the throw out can only take so much aggressive driving before it decides to squeek, but does not appear to give any additional problems.

I dont think it has to do with older fluid, its just another sound quirk of this car. My old 97 eclipse gst used to have the nice valve tap sound upon cold start even after a fresh oil change. Just growing pain sounds.

Bringing the dead thread back, I just got back from the dealership due to same exact problem that OP described. Went out for a test drive with a service guy to demonstrate the humming sound. He and the service manager said it's normal noise from wear and tear. Mine is at 13500 miles now and the sound developed around 10000 miles. I will change out the transmission and t-case oil this weekend to see if it helps any. I doubt it though. Also, the dealership said that they would cover this under warranty if the problem worsens. I do have TBE w/ a flash and they didnt seem to mind at all. Anyone else with similar problems?

my 03 Evo was making the same humming noise, it doesnt really ever do it when i downshift anymore, but im half throttle it'll start humming between 3k and 4k rpm. so when im cruising down the highway at 80 it just hums constantly. i took it to mitsu and they said it was my intake. i was like wtf you guys are retarted. so they put the stock intake back on and made me drive it aroudn, and the noise was gone....so i felt pretty stupid i guess im gunna have to deal with that answer for now though.
