I think that the ECU's came mapped differently from the factory. The '05's have more agressive fuel and timing maps than the 03 models, due mostly to the 10.5 vs. the 9.8 hotside.

Anyway, and i may be way wrong, and most likely am...however, I think that in ´05 Mitsubishi Motors went to a different front diff setup on the USDM Evo´s and that some aftermarket downpipes(and catbacks?) originally designed for the ´03 & ´04 USDM Evo´s had resulting clearance issues. Correct me if I´m wrong, guys.
My Megan downpipe which I ordered for a 2004 USDM Evo while my car has ACD(so my car is actually more like a USDM ´05 model) has MAJOR clearance issues...I really had to stack washers for the chassis bars to clear and it screwed up the relationship, or clearance, between muffler tip and the cutaway in my JDM bumper.
So, research before assuming that the exhaust from a 2003 is automatically gonna fit your 2005. Nowadays, most of the vendors or exhaust manufacturers are pretty savvy and will specify which year their product is designed to fit. Many of the newer systems are designed to work on both the ´03-04 cars, as well as the ´05´s. Some of the earlier designs have been updated so as they provide total 03-05 fitment.
