Evolution drivability/reliability

hey guys, I am planning on getting either a new RSX type-s or a used Evolution in december. I know that there is a big difference in the cars, but I love them both. Just wondering, how is the drivability of an AWD different from a front wheel drive? I know the feeling of a front wheel drive, but a AWD is a car that I have never driven before. Is there any big differences that I will notice? I know that traction will be amazing. I've been trolling around on the forums and have noticed that many say the 2005 Evo VIII is the best year to get because of the stronger transmission and and tranny box. If I decide to buy a used evo, it will probably be an MR edition. I also have heard that when buying these cars used, there is a large risk that they have been beaten on. What are some trouble issues that I should look for before buying a used evo? How reliable are they? I know that these cars respond extremely well to mods compared to any other car, including the type-s. Any input would be extremely appreciated, thanks!

you should search around a little bit prior to posting reliability is a highly discussed topic...searching is your friend

basically what you will come up with is IF you mod it...you will raise the odds of having issues.

If you plan on buying one with a stock clutch just remember to have the extra $ sitting around for when it goes.

I have 39K on my stock clutch and it's still performing perfectly. Of course, I have never launched my car or tracked it, and most of those miles are highway miles. I don't kow how many miles you can get out of a stock clutch if you drive it hard, though.

If I were you I would hold out on purchasing either of your choices because both of them are due for a model change within the next two years. I know you want a used evo, but I think that a lot of people will be trading in thier old Evos for a new one therefore lowering thier prices (if the X is any good)

I can honestly say don't buy a used EVO unless you know the previous owner. You are much better off getting the RSX if you are looking for a used vehicle. If the previous owner of the EVO has done something to void the warranty and you aren't aware of it, you are going be pretty pissed when you stuck with the bill. I will never buy a used sports car, even if it's certified. Don't buy someone elses problem, especially a used EVO.

I'd have to agree with you about a used sports car. He even said he would be buying a new RSX. So I would opt for a new Honda/Acura over a used Mitsubishi (if someone is concerned mostly about reliability.) It doesnt seem like performance is a big factor for him. (If it was, I'd say get the evo. )

Look into tsbs/complaints about the RSX 6-speed syncros though. They have a history of being weak and I'm not sure if they've solved that problem yet. But since you're considering an RSX, try out a new VW Gti too.

when I was looking for a car I test drove every sports car out there. I race SCCA club racing, so I know a little about driving cars. The RSX type S is the biggest pile of crap I have ever test drove. I cannot understand they sell that!! handle very poorly, no power, etc.......
I would definitely go with the EVO!

I see where you are coming from with the SCCA background. The RSX is quite a bit cheaper, unless you buy the options. And they offer a little more luxury and fuel economy. Yeah it's no contest with performance. But I'm not so sure if that's all this guy wants.

hey guys,
I really appreciate all the input, im a total newbie when it comes to Evo's and Sti's. I have done some research on the RSX type-s, and the only thing that I dont understand with the Evo's and Sti's are the engines and the reflashes ect.

I do know that the DC5 is going to be discontinued this year, and that the Evo is going to be getting a make over with the Evo X. With my questions about the evo's reliablility and the handling comes from the fact that I will be buying a car in december, whether it be the DC5 or the Evo. There are two problems however, and honestly, I dont know what to do.

The first:
Because the DC5 is going to be discontinued this year, I am going to run into a huge problem coming December since they wont have any DC5s in stock with the options that I want, or just wont have any in stock to begin with. Now if I cant get a dc5, then I might as well take that money and buy a used Evo, i've seen some in the 22K Evo VIII, and the 28-29K Evo IX. If I do buy a used evo, it will be through a dealer used car auction, where only dealers can bid, hopefully, it will yield a lower price. Some of you may be wondering why in December, its because my dad said that he will help me buy a car, but not until the end of the year, which is December. <---he wont budge on this.

The second problem-
If I were to buy a used Evo, I've heard some people say that they would stay away from buying a used Evo, since they have been beaten on. Hopefully these dealer auctions will have better treated cars?

I honestly dont know which car I want, to many, its a great problem to have, but right now, its a pain in my ***. The dc5 offers luxury, while the evo is just a beast. I want the best of both worlds, but dont want to sacrafice anything. Im just worried about the used car with the evo.

it'll be best if you know the owner of the evo.

AWD and FWD are totally different. keep in mind that awd is grippy, you wont burn/peel out...and if you do it'll be hard. you cant chirp as you would any honda. try to chirp and you'l hear your rear diff make a clunk, possibly causing damage. evos arent meant for drag...but there are guys who happen to use it for that.

i say you look at VWs. Golfs are nice. R32 has awd, GTI has turbo. Audi A4s are nice...awd turbo...might be a bit too pricy.

but your choice of car should depend on what you are planning to do with it.

I have 8 track days (road racing) with stock clutch 47k and counting, My car is also my daily driver. If you want your clutch to last long just dont drag race..or launch.

I would also shy away from buying a used evo, unless you know the person. Its a bad idea cuz they usually have been worked on and returned back to stock.
