Thumbs up A new IX MR owner

Hello all! Glad to be a part of this forum. Thanks for accepting me. Just wanted to introduce myself, say hi, and ask a few newbie questions.

Got my MR two months ago and now have close to 3000 miles on it (drove it to Disneyworld with the family). My evo must be the only one with a baby seat in the back! And no, I don't rev it up with the baby. LOL. It's a pleasure car for the weekends and vacation trips.

Had a question about the driver's side "black" Bilstein shock but after doing a search on this forum found out it was only covered with tar and soot. Scraped it and sure enough it's yellow. It's yellow on the passenger side. First off, why the heck is that? I know I didn't drive it that hard. I suppose I need to wash it off somehow -- or should I?

My second question is should I change the oil now at 3000, instead at 5000? I know it's synthetic but isn't the first oil change the most important? Can I go to any Mitsu dealership to service the evo -- I'm worried about the competence of the service people to service such an automotive marvel!

Anything else I need to know?

Zen Man

.

Alot of times it helps to follow exactly what the manual says as far as maitnence goes and you will have no problems. Unortunately here on the forums, Dealerships have a bad reputation with service.

Anyways, welcome and grats on the car .

Hi there! Welcome to the forums and congras on the IX MR! I just got one myself a month ago, but been lurking on here for a while. As to your 1st ? on the Bilstein, I dont' know the answer to that, hopefully someone can chime in.

Second is..you're find on here that some people change their oil within the first 500 to 1500 miles and then follow the manual while others just straight follow the manual. There are different schools of thoughts about that. I follow the "servere" guidelines, which is every 3700 miles because mine is my daily driver. Changing oil at around 3000ish is not a prob..you can't go wrong with oil changing it more freq then what the manual says.

Third--I reasearched my dealerships on here. I found one recommended on the "greenlighted mitsubishi" and then double check with BBB. Majority of the people on here change their oil, but because I don't have a garage or anything close, I have to rely on the dealership. I can't imagine them screwing up an oil change, however, if they screw up and something breaks... they're paying for it!

welcome and congrats on your evo. you're not only one with a car seat in their evo. the black bilstein is due to the black undercoating that they sprayed on the car. If I'm not mistaken, only on MR's and don't try to brush it off because it is like a oily and greasy black substance. As for the first oil change, do it at 5000miles or more. It is mobil 1 factory fill and that oil can withstand the break-in period. Some makers like my honda and lexus add some break-in oil that you really have to kep it up to 6000miles. But I had the dealer change oil at 5000miles anyway.

Welcome, change your oil every 3k at least. I would highly suggest doing it yourself, the dealerships are known to mess up Evo's bad. Along with fatty McFatpants leaning all over your new car. Also that tar underneath the car is normal, the factory sprays it on. In the summertime you will notice it around your wheels & shocks coming off.

The cronic oilchanging behavior is really not necessary until later...
But yeah. Congrats on the car!!

Nah, there's a few, mine has one too.

I had my first free oil change at 700miles, my next one is due at 3,500. I was told the car comes with break in oil, which needs to be switched out early or it can cause issues. It was free as are the next 2 so I have no reason to believe they're bs'ing me.

Wow! Thanks for all your replies! What's really amazing is all the family men (or women) on this board. I thought I'm the few who are actually "grown up" driving an evo. Thanks again guys, you make me feel part of the gang here.

I guess I'll have to rely on the dealership -- don't know why but there's this nagging worry that they might screw up by putting non-synthetic oil, etc. Once had a 95 Oldsmobile 88 LSS (first year it had a supercharger) and the DEALER serviceman forgot to put back the oil cap and I drove that car for over 100 miles until I noticed it uncovered!! My local Toyota dealership is pretty good so I'm hoping that Mitsu here is the same too.

My 06 MR is black as my avatar. All stock. Pain in the *** to maintain but it sure looks good as long as it's clean.
