Cams...basic questions

Yeah I understand that. It's just hard to filter through all the information and at the same time keep up with the lingo that is used.
is there a common rule of thumb with cams? For example, the 264/264 gives you most low end at a loss of top, 272/272 best of both worlds, and 280/280 gives more top end at a loss of low end?
I'm not really concerned about idling as jestr told me he could make even 280's idle like stock.
Just what would be recommended for my bolt-on type mods...
