EVO MR Delima, Cant Decide
Just looking for some comments I guess. I was debating getting either a MR or STI this last summer. I finial decided on the STI, but it fell threw because of insurance cost, but I'm now willing to foot the bill.
I currently drive an 03 SRT4, and to be honest I really love the car. The one and only draw back for me is that its front wheel drive, thats it. IMO its got one of best turbo 4s, the gas mileage is far better than the EVO and STI, and I do the like interior. I think the seats kill both STI and EVO. But enough about that, I want an all wheel car. I'm starting to snowboard a lot and I need that option. Plus the STI or EVO MR will be a step up, which I want to take.
I guess I'm back to square one on making up my mind. I have driven both before. I see it like this.
STI pros
- Rides better in town than the EVO.
- Good motor with a nice broad torque range.
- IMO interior is a little nicer than the EVO.
- Styling is pretty sick for 06-07.
- Bigger gas tank for long cruise range.
- Adjustable DCCD is pretty cool.
STI cons
- I guess there having issue with the fly by wire (I really hate fly by wire) ie, bog or stutter.
- Rear seat doesn't not fold down. Which sucks. I don't want a roof rack for my snowboards and gear.
- Stock for stock, slower overall than the EVO MR.
- Heavier than MR.
MR pros
- Awesome drive train.
- Great styling.
- Stock for stock, faster than the STI.
- Prob more mod options.
- As far as I can remember the rear seat folds down.
- Lighter than STI.
- Not fly by wire.
MR cons
- IMO rides like crap for everyday driving.
- STI has better interior.
- For some reason I hate the front seats, very un comfy for me.
- For a 2L to be making big power, seems kinda high strung.
What do you guys think I should do? The car is going to be used as any everyday driver on the crappy pot hole traffic infested streets of Hollywood, and I want to be able to put down some where around 350whp (400whp would be nice but, just enough so I don't feel like I'm taking a step down from my SRT, and not worrying about getting beat by some stock or lightly modded cars), without major mods. No water/meth or NOS. If I have to I want to be able to remove the mods for legit warranty work (not for anything I may have done) or getting it smog-ed.
Thanks, I know this is an EVO forum, but theres got to be some people that know both cars.

The tranny on the MR is actually not as strong as the base 5 speed. The tranny in the STI is better than the stock WRX 5 speed so those are differences.
The STI is brutish and durable. It's like a hammer. The EVO is quicker and more nimble. Its like a scalpel.
In the end you need to find out which one is for you based on your attitude as they are both cool cars.
Pick your poison.

seats do not fold down in the MR. I would disagree that the 6 speed is weaker than the 5 speed however. I love my MR but you have to do what fits you best. My buddy has 2 Subarus and my cousin has a decked out 04 wrx and they really like their cars too. You should be happy with whatever you choose.
Also I really like the in town ride of the MR, better than reg Evo in my opinion. Haven't taken a ride in a stock susp. 06 or 07 sti so can't comment on that.

I've owned a subaru for about 4 years now and today I trade in my WRX to buy an EVO. I loved my subaru but after years of working on that engine plus test driving an MR i've decided to go with the EVO. My decision was based on the fact that I don't like the exterior of the new STI, their engines are hard to work on and the horsepower potential isn't that high for the money you have to put in. Don't get me wrong the STI is a great car i've just had enough with subarus. As for Subaru warrenty they arn't as great as people make them out to be. Either way your going to get a good car, best of luck with it.

Oh yeah my WRX was heavily modified, 2.5l forged shortblock, turbo and all that stuff so i've had alot of experiance modifying them.

I'll just verify some comments from above ...
MR seats do not fold.
6 Speed is only weaker if you plan to track the car heavily. Shifting is very smooth once broken in.
Suspension is softer than the base IX, but still a little stiff. Not bad for DD though.
I love the seats, but I also haven't driven an STi or SRT-4.
I chose the MR over the STi for:
Styling
Aluminium/HID/6-speed/BBS (compared to base IX)
Impressive engine efficiency (~143hp/li)
Mod responsive
Hope my comments help.

The MR has a softer ride than the STI.
The MR's Recaro seats are extemely confining (as a good sport seat should be) but are extremely comfortable for a person my size. The STI seats are nothing special, very flat with little side bolstering or support - also they are uncomfortable for a long drive (10hrs). The STI's controls and dash are a step up from the Evos. The Evo's AC system is compact car, the STI's reminds me of something you would find in a midsize. Overall the Evo is designed more with performance first and the STI leans a little more towards civilized. Also the STI has a cruise option - not availabe in the MR.
IMO The STI's drive by wire is not a real issue, I have never noticed it. It's very well done.
DCCD is primative in comparison to ACD from what I understand. In my case the suby stays in auto and the mitsu stays in tarmac. I wouldnt even use this to determine whether or not to purchase. Of course I dont live in a snow ridden state but the Evo does have a snow option on the ACD settings. Either car will need new tires for winter so plan on changing them. (PM me if you want to sell your ADVANs cheap). The STI's rear locker / diff makes alot of noise backing up or making tight turns - this is normal behaivior.
The Evo seat does not fold down. However the Evo actually has leg room in the back seat area and has a much roomier interior in general. I can barely say that the STI's interior is nicer. Really it's just more stylish. I dont think the STI's seat coverings are as durable as the Evo's. However the plastic parts probably are more durable. The STI's sport pedals are difficult if not impossible for me to heel toe. The Evo's are exactly where they should be and very easy to heel toe.
As far as being high strung, the STI is more high strung than the Evo. It's turbo is almost at max efficiency already - 14b sized turbo w/ 2.5ltr vs 20g sized turbo wtih 2.0ltr - The 4g63 has much more potential than the Suby's 2.5ltr at this time. It's not even recommended to put a boost controller on a STI because they will blow up. Overall the STI feels like a normally aspirated car to me while the Evo's turbo comes on like a freight train in comparison.
Our subaru dealership seems alot more helpful than our Mitsubishi dealership.
