How big is the stock intercooler for the evo?

Hey guys,

I was just wondering how big the stock evo's intercooler was. The pipe size and everything? Also how much power can the intercooler and piping take before it needs to be upgraded to a bigger intercooler and bigger piping? Hope this doesn't get flamed..

you really don't need to upgrade unless your turbo is upgraded.

Depends on the amount of psi you run through it obviously.

The intercooler was designed for use on our 16g turbo so anything flowing around 42lbs/min worth of boost or less would be ok. The intercooler itself may handle up to 50lbs/min of air in short bursts but would probably heat soak pretty quickly.

I'll pull up the actually dimensions later.

EDIT:

25"x11.5"x3" IC Dimensions

THanks! Well I'm trying to make a custom FMIC for my ride. The guys who I am bringing it to says I could use the EVO's stock IC. So I figured why not try it. Plus I'm not running anything higher then 16 - 18psi.

I hope you mean lbs/min

The psi does affect the air charge temperature thus my reason for even bringing it up.

Or you are running alky/meth and high pressure. Some will say this isnt true but then those same people will complain they didnt get as much out of their alky that they'd hoped for.

I have am AMS turbo back and a base turn with new fuel pump. Those mods made a difference but they wern't very prevelant. I just installed the AMS FMIC with lower IC Pipe. This made a very noticable difference. turbos spools faster and harder at higher RPM's.

My take is that the turbo was starved for air with the stock FMIC. I feel it was the single best upgrade i made on my car.

Hmm thanks for the input guys! I dont really own a EVO like i said. I was just thinking of using the EVO's IC for my Speed 6. Since so many people are getting rid of theres and running bigger ones. I just want a OKAY one. For those who dont know about the speed 6. It has a TMIC, but it heat soaks too much, so I was planning on puting a FMIC on there using the EVO's IC.

What size engine is in a speed 6?

Whats the psi and maximum rpm?

With those numbers you should be able to get a rough estimate of the flow required and see if the intercooler will be up to the job and how far you can push it.
