I love my MR... I do sometimes wonder if the 6sp will hold up but it is amazing. You could however get a Subaru WRX and get the turbo feel... not as much to insure, not as much to pay for, and still have some cash to play with.

Id wait until after college. Thats what I did ^_^ Im only 21 and I've owned an STi and and Evo... its all up to you.

I did think about it, if I were to buy the evo I would still have money left over each month, plenty to goto the movies and go out to eat occasionaly.. but not enough money to drop any high dollar upgrades.. thats what I meant by the limit of the budget..

I'm probably going to follow your advice though, I've been leaning toward a 91 CRX although I would take the Evo over it in a heartbeat, with my budget and schedule I think buying the CRX and having a paycheck each month to put in to mods IF I DESIRE would be a better idea.. then being set on a payment each month.. at least until I have a reliable career... by then I'll probably be looking at the XI lol ;]

The reason for this post though.. is I've never owned any Evo.. and I'm seriously considering buying an Evo IX MR new.

The dilemma is after reading plenty of posts on here, there seems to be tons of complains housed against the stock makeup of the Evo IX. Now I'm sure it could just be the normal complaining everyones going to do about a product, but before jumping into an investment of 30k$ plus I want to make sure, as I will probably be leaving the car quite stock for sometime... as I am currently only 18 and a college student.. and the car payments + insurance would be pretty much the limit of my budget.

The question is, with a very very limited knowledge of cars.. (I seriously don't know much about cars.. but am very willing to learn..) and wanting to use the car as a Daily Driver.. with a commute of about 80-90 miles to work.. a few times a week.. is the Evo worth it?

I really don't plan to be racing the Evo or taking it to the track anytime soon, but possibly in the future after I'm finished with school and have the budget for mods.. for now I just need a car as a DD and with some occasional power for when I want to get on the right pedal :]

Thanks for all your help, in advance :]
if your not going to drive the evo to it's potential whether its tracking it or draging it, then why not get a beater for your commute to work? save the money and you wont have to be worried about living on a budget?

If you do get the honda U would be doing better than I did....

My First car was a friggin Cavelier..... OMG I hated that car, I wish I had a honda or a toyota back in the day......

G/L Bro, I waited 4yrs. before I could get behind the wheel of a EVO. It's worth it in the end.

I just want to throw in that the STI might be a better DD. It has CC a softer ride, and more low-end tq to get you out of tight places when you need to in traffic.

you seem like a smart person and the smart move would be to a cheaper japanese car that is still fun to drive and enjoy your years whilst saving up when you can truly enjoy the evo...

Its not my first car by any means, I had an 89 Civic that got stolen, and then had a 97 Integra LS but got rid of it.. and now I'm driving a 67 Chevy Truck.

So yah I drive the beater right now.. and the truck just isn't reliable enough to make the commute I need to.. or nice enough to take the girls out ;] haha

In your place I'd look at the wrx, legacy gt, sti, or mazdaspeed 6. All are much easier to deal with for commuting.

Get a used 97, 98 or 99 Eclipse GSX. Fits your budget and you still have money left over to play with and tons of aftermarket options. Plus, they look badass. Still turbo, still AWD.

Is there a community like h-t or evom for eclipse?

I talked to a friend whos quite a bit more knowledgeable about cars and said that a GSX would definately be a good option for me... but I want to be able to read and learn for myself.. and know what kind of modding I should be looking at.. I mean I don't plan on having the car I buy right now for ever.. probably like 3-5 years.. which probably seems long for people who trade in there evos each generation..

A '97-'99 Eclipse GS-T or GSX would definitely be a good car to start with in college since they're reasonably economical while being quite potent. Seeing how it is a Mitsubishi and has an engine related to the Evo's own 4G63, it will definitely teach you a bit. The downside is that those particular Eclipses, especially the GSXs, are a little harder to find in good condition without tons of miles nowadays. I remember when I was in high school, people used to always want to get those and throw on boost control and have 13-second cars.

But if you want to be fun while being economical, look into an EG6 Civic hatchback ('92-'95) and put a B18C motor (Integra GS-R) motor in it. It will be a really quick daily driver that will still get well over 30 mpg on your commute, plus it will leave a lot of room for tuning potential. It's not quite an Evo, but it'll be a good college car. But if you want to go nuts, put in an H22A (Prelude) motor in it.

Then when you're almost done, look into an Evo. I got my first Evo during my last quarter in college, and I'm glad I didn't have to live with the upkeep of it as a college student. It would've been a headache, plus keeping the car in on-campus parking can be frustrating, due to completely filled lots (so you can't park your car by itself), potential door dings, exposure to the elements, vandals, etc.

Yeah dont get it, With you wasting 80-90 miles a day and very tight budget once its bought. Car is very high maintenance. You better off getting something else and not have to worry about. Until you get out of college the EVO X will come out and then you can start on a new generating of EVO ^_^. Good luck on your choice. Although EVO IX MR is a must buy, its still not worth the pay and stuff. Thats what i think
