when exactly do you hear the whining? Recently I've noticed that when I'm slowing down and downshift, as I let the clutch out right before the point where it engages, I hear a whining. I'm wondering if this is the same thing you're experiencing. I first noticed it going into second, now I notice it going down to second or 3rd. I don't know if it was always like this and I just started noticing or what, but the car is stock and only has 3k miles. Never been launched hard or anything

Its something called "transmission error"

Basically to sum up a lengthy segment of me explaining it the noise you hear as whining in the transmission at these low speeds is completely normal.

Here's what happens:

The gears inside your transmission have very minor defects, or imperfections, of which are around a micro inch which is quite small. As the teeth interact at different speeds and loads they oscillate vibrating the casing and ultimately producing the whine you hear. This whine can NOT BE ELIMINATED totally, it can only be reduced by careful tooth profiling which can account for these imperfections. If you would like to listen to a gear which nearly all manufacturers spend little time quieting down get up to some moderate speed in reverse, loud as hell.

This should not be confused with transfer case problems of which noises will appear in the very loads and speeds which are designed to be quiet in normal driving conditions like 30-50mph. When you fracture the teeth in your transfer case your actually creating transmission error which of course produces a whine which is usually quite loud ranging from "jet whine" to "terrible screeching" and if you really tear it apart "rocks in a blender" sounds.

Hmm... while I was driving today, I noticed that anytime I had my foot on the gas, there was a whine like an RC car. How can I possibly tell if it's that normal whine, or if I mangled my TC?

If the tc is gone it will get louder, much louder, the faster you go (like a tornado siren) in fact you can search "tornado siren" for a better description. The noise you are hearing is prolly normal. Power steering pump whines when under throttle.

Thanks. Definitely more like an RC car than a tornado siren.
