Hey everyone! Names Austin but friends call me Slate. im 20 y/o and in the Army. ive been a Diesel mechanic working on military trucks for the past 2 years and havnt had much time to tinker with gas powered cars (other then my own but still not much done ). i know what yall are thinking... he drives a Cobalt? yeh well i like the body style and it was all i could afford at the time. had a datsun 280z and a 4 dr civic before that. anyways im currently deployed to iraq and have finally added up how much ill have saved when i get home . i think its time to give up the balt and go Evo. it wont be until Feb-Mar of next year when i get home but i will be researching until my brain explodes! im not necessarily new to F/I because the trucks we work on have turbos bigger then my head and superchargers longer then my torso. the only thing is that they are i guess... pretuned so there are no boost controllers, etc. i know what they do and the basic info. oh ill be either getting the VIII or IX just to put that out there if there is any advice at all that would be helpful that you think i might need to know then im all ears

welcome to the site, and thanks for your service.. just do a lot of homework and find the cleanest evo you can.. try to get a ix if you can, but if not shoot for a 05 viii.. if thats still out of your budget just find an owner who took care of his car.. chances are they are all beat on a bit, but find the one that was beat on the least.

 

Bein that your in the military and you don't make much money, take your time and shop around. Try to get the best deal possible that you can afford with your little paychecks. And be careful buying one from a dealer around the military bases, for some reason they love to screw over military personel. But most importantly, be safe and dodge them bullets buddy. lol thanks for the support guys. yeh we dont make alot of money but over here there isnt much to spend on so ill have enough to buy one and still put some basic mods down. and trust me when i say my brain hurts from the research

1st off thanks for your service and keeping it so we can do the things we do back here at home.......we honor your service daily.......Get a IX if you can they have more potential outta the box.....tell us your plans for the Evo? Drag, road race...??

 

thanks again guys! its guys like yall that keep us going! hmm yeh i want to get the IX. actually in truth i want a X but as in making the mistake with the Cobalt first coming out with pretty much NO aftermarket parts due to tuning complications for the past... almost 3 years, ive decided to go with a used IX until a couple of years down the road then trade in. that way the bigger aftermarket corps can get their hands dirty first. as far as the racing... ive never been able to experience Road Racing... its probably going to be mostly drag but i wouldnt mind learning! dont think there is a track anywhere but probably Austin. im kinda looking at 400whp on pump gas as my first goal. from there ill press on and see what i can get out of her.

 

Make sure when you do get back and start looking for one you do a carfax report... Ever since I listed mine and people kept buying ones with fewer miles for cheaper I decided to delve into why people were selling them cheaper... Most of them had been wrecked at least once... Never totalled, no one seemed to be scamming that bad, but wrecked none the less... And they weren't telling anyone about it.

 

hmm i will keep that in mind. dont think itd be kool to ride in a car made completely out of bondo haha! i will make sure to do the report and do a thorough look-over on the car with a couple of my friends. the more people looking at it the more likely something will be brought up if anything is out of place. thanks for the headsup!
