Quick transmission question:

I couldnt find this through the primitive search function.

Which transmission is better? I'm interested in getting either an evo 8 or evo 9. If the 6 speed is indeed better, I'll get the evo 8/9 MR. If the 5 speed is, then i'll get any other model.

By better I mean stronger, less clunky and less prone to synchro failure.

Also, is there a link somewhere which states the differences between the 05 MR and the 06MR? I couldn't find that either.

From the research I have done and info I gathered it seems the 5 speed is stronger and less notchy then the 6 speed.

A lot of people speak about the 6spd being weaker. The 5spd theoretically has less things going in the same box therefore it would be stronger. From what I've heard the 5spd is stronger but most people dont notice the difference unless they bring the car to the track. For everyday driving the 6spd is fine.

Thanks for the quick replys. This broadens my search to include the evo 9 SE which has recaro seats (i really like those!) or the GSR with the SSL package. Thanks!

What should a evo 9 SE with 20kish miles sell for? KBB says one thing, dealer says another. I have a 2005 350Z with 25k miles on it I want to sell too, so take that into concideration.

A lot of people with the 6 speed gear boxes blow their 4th gear. I think Warrtalon can chime in as he has blown his.....

From what I have read and heard the 5 Gear is stronger...

I dont do drag racing so i dont think i'd blow a gear out. Im just worried about synchros since I do some autoX.

What are the top speeds of each gear in both transmission (at 7k rpm?). I tried to look but I can't find it.

Someone mentioned that the 6 speed is notchy.. it is NOT notchy.. it shifts like butter, much smoother than a 5 speed Evo or any other AWD car that I've driven. 5 speed Evo's, 6 speed STI's, 5 speed WRX's etc. The gears are very well placed for in-town driving, unlike our 06 STI which has much too short of gears. The 5 speeds gears feel a bit long but it still works well for in-town driving.

Most people that have damaged their 4th gear and/or syncros were due to track use (road track, not drag, or autox.. real road track), or inexperienced drivers trying stupid things (no lift shifting, power shifting, slamming gears, etc). If you drive the 6 speed like an adult it will hold up fine unless your planning on over 500whp.

The 6 speed has a slightly taller final gear (6th) than the 5 speed's 5th gear.. a few miles per hour, dont consider that a reason to get the MR (top speed) as you'll probably never top out the car or at least you wont do it often and the 6th and 5th are essentially the same gear in both cars, the 6 speed just has 5 gears below it where the 5 speed only has 4.

The 5 speed traps higher mph in modded cars and is capable of 120+ mph in 4th where the 6 speed tops out at 107mph with the stock rev limiter (can be increased).

All of that said the SE is an incredible bargain without the 6 speed.
