Turbo Cooling Concern

Hello everyone! I just got back from an energy draining, 450 mile drive from Southcoast to my hometown Elk Grove. I didnt really boost the car too much, just a little by little, still keeping my rev under 5k. Also, I didnt mash the gas pedal to the floor, I was barely pushing on it. Its not that I boosted the car a lot, but its that I had a couple of long drive intervals. When we did take a break, I let the car idle for about 2 minutes before shutting off. There was about two times when I forgot to let the turbo cool, but that was when I was city driving, with very very little boost. Have I caused my turbo or my engine some damage?

Whenever I did boost though, my stock boost gauge never went passed 1.1, I hope that helps a little bit in calculating that damage, if there is any

LOL sorry if I am, IT IS my very first car that is mine. I went from a 1994 Toyota Previa (with a dead Supercharger) to a brand new 2006 Evo IX MR.. So I dont want to take any chances!

good advise. some people swear by turbo timers but i think the $100 could be spent elseware. just drive with the car around 2k rpms for the last 2 or so miles before you park and the turbo will be fine.

relax it is okay. I drove more than 500 miles to pick up my car and was not a bit worried.

Cool, thanks guys! So basically what you guys are saying is that its not the length of drive, its whether or not I put on the boost. Anyone know how to read the stock boost gauge?

Max boost I went was 1.1, what is that in PSI?

The stock boost gauge is in BARS. 1 bar = 14.5 psi. Just Google "convert bars to psi" and they'll be all kinds of calculators you can play with.

You're right, it's not the length of the drive. It's whether or not you're in boost right before you shut off the car. It's also the oil temperature. The hotter the oil temp, the longer you should wait before you turn the car off. It's scalding hot oil that can kill your turbo...
