Help me beat a built Lightning!!!
Help me beat a built Lightning!!!
I recently bought an EVO (2 days ago), 06 MR. I am coming from a muscle background. I have an 04 F-150 Lightning with about $15K into it and did all the work myself. Its a supercharged V-8 and runs a high 11 on spray. I bought the car as a second car for a fun daily driver and know little about Turbos. Reading on here all day today, I was suprised at how little it appears to take to make these cars run in the 11s as well. Help me out, I searched and searched all day today, beefing up on my turbo/evo knowledge. I was hoping I could throw out there what I am going for and get some feedback. As this is my daily driver I would like to know some of the little quirksfor install up front (ie O2 fixes for test pipe, BOV non recirculation requiremens.
I want to keep gas mileage decent if possible. Oh and since it really isnt going to be a tracked car, sounds and looks are somewhat important if that can be kept in mind.
Here is my plan:
1.) Intake - A simple K and N cone filter adapted to the MAF (from posts this appears to be more efficient than the K and N full kit? I would think the kit would be better to redusce intake temps, but this may also reduce the BOV sound.)
2.) Exhaust - Megan TBE without a Cat. I am going for a deeper, louder sound that stays away from being ricey will this accomplish this sound as well as performance? I listened to a few online and thought this sounded good and a good price, am i mistaken? Are there better deeper notes out there? I also read a few things about O2 issues with the test pipe, but was confused.
3.) BOV - Greddy RS BOV. I was disappointed when I got the car that it did not make the blow off noise. A lot of people dislike it, but I want this to be loud. Will it be loud if I recirculate and use the above intake or what is necessary to use this without the recirculation. I saw good and bad for all products and setups on this. I want the noise, dont want it to hinder performance, but dont care if it does nothing to help the performance.
4.) Boost Controller - Do I need this if I get a dyno tune? I figure I will go with an electronic one from Greddy.
5.) Greddy Turbo Timer
6.) CAMS - To be honest I have not researched these is depth yet.
7.) Head studs
8.) Nice and safe dyno TUNE!!!
So, I want the BOV sound nice and loud, the exhaust loud and deep and to hopefully run in the 11's all while keeping the gas mileage in the 20 mpg + range. You guys are the gurus! If I can do this anyone want to buy a real nice Lightning!=)
Thanks for all your help, I wont be a dumb noob for long.

Very simple you can avoid a lot of those mods if you want best bang for the buck.
1. Get a boost guage
2. Get a turbo-back exhaust (doesn't matter as long as it 3 inches)
3. K&N intake distorts maf readings stay away from it. Go with the AMS, BR,ETS
4. Get a manual boost controller (MBC)
5. 02 housing
6. Get a good tune
You should be into the low 12's high 11's depending on how you drive. Save up for a clutch.
The stock bov works great you don't need to change it at this power level.

With the above mentioned intakes you will get a decent blow-off sound with your stock BOV. FYI the AMS/Vibrant 3" exhaust is slightly pricey but sounds good & mean. Do a search for the mechanical fix for the O2 sensor onyour test pipe (it works perfect for me / no CELs ever).
P.S. when the car feels slow down the road go with a 50Trim Kit & Meth!

Feedback - keep on reading and more research. You have a bunch of misconceptions that are the usual "no-no's" here.
1. K/N FIPK is one of the worst overpriced POSs ever made. Its crap and not worth it as mentioned above. Intake temps? Its a turbo - thats heated air.
Get a cone filter and adapter.
2. Megan TBE is ok. Here is a vid my Apexi GT Spec:

3. Do not get that BOV. You dont hear the BOV because of the intake box. See number 1. With a cone you will hear the BOV. Second you must recir the BOV with a MAF car - read up on that. The 9 DV (BOV) is actually a good piece. Try the cone filter with the stock DV - if thats not good enough then come back and read up on others.
PS - I have a cone filter and Forge RS BOV recir. listen to the video - that is still loud and no performance loss. In car:

4. Get a manual boost controller - way easier to use and way cheaper. Hallman or Forge.
5. Sure some like a TT.
6. Not what I would bother with and not need for 11s.
7. Installed right - sure. But ask some of the 9 guys - I dont hear them being installed as much with them.
8. Dyno tune - good. Some good shops in FL (TTP) or look up Mellon Tuning - also another great tuner.
Here are the basics for a 9 - TBE, MBC (Boost gauge), Tune. Good driving and that could be 11s. Do a higher boost and race gas tune - and you would be closer/easier into the 11s.

turboback, mbc, adapater and k & n filter, boost gauge, tune and ur running 11's with a little race gas and higher boost
i ran 11's with $300 in mods
head studs arent needed at all for stock turbo.....period

he doesnt need a boost gauge. You already got one but it in bars just do the ratio. Look, 1 bar is 14 pounds i have mine in 1.6 so its 23 pounds. Put you money in something better than gauges for now. I think the normal order on moding is kn drop in (not the intake one), turbo back exhaust, 02 housing, cams and tune. If ur on a budget well go to the for sale part by evo owners and keep close watch on the ratings of people.
Good luck
Good luck
you should definetly get cams, for the money the power is outstanding, as far as the bov unless you plan on running meth or something at high boost just get an intake, maybe with ic pipe kit and you will be very happy with how the stock bov. the intake makes the sound a 100 times louder, good luck man
