OMG Look! A Newbie!!!
OMG Look! A Newbie!!!
Hello all. Thought I'd join the forum and poke around. I don't have an Evo, but I'm considering getting one. I have a LOT of experience building cars and modding them. My last two cars were Hyundai Tiburons. Yes, I expect there will be some snickers, but I can attest that they are very well-built cars and once you get all the factory crap off them they go like stink. Plus, they have great lines.
This was my first Tib. Basically my DD. Mods were rims, springs, lip and side-skirts, STS, and a 5 psi Alpine supercharger. Great car, but thought I'd step up to the next level of performance... which is where my 2nd Tib came in.

My 2nd Tib was extreme. A fully built race/show car. A balanced/blueprinted built motor with forged Wiseco pistons, a Vortec supercharger pushing 30 psi, chromed and polished everything including the suspension pieces and K-member. The car was wickedly fast... but it was so extreme it was practically undriveable. Plus, it was very high-maintenance. I never got it sorted out enough to even get it on a dyno. So I got rid of it.

So, my next car will be something that's already got FI from the factory. Evo, STI, or SRT-4.
So... that's me.

That was paint, not vinyl. I wish it was vinyl because I would have taken it off. It didn't turn out as I had hoped. The guy who thought up the paint scheme did some sketches, and it looked awesome in sketch form, but it didn't translate to real life as well as I'd hoped. I was VERY disappointed with the final look... but I'd already sunk a lot of money into the paint, so I kept it as-is.
But the white part was beautiful. It was a blue undercoat with a pearl white overcoat, and when the sun hit the paint it had a hint of blue in the reflection.

But the greatest tragedy of all is that I don't have a hot car anymore. I just have my bone-stock Chevy HHR to cart me, my bride, my kids and my dogs around. It is strictly an appliance. I've been without something fast for almost a year and the itch is coming back.
And I LOVE the Evo.
I agree. I went too far on it. All the other cars I've owned have been "less is more", like the silver one. But the white one I decided to do "more is more" and it ended up looking like crap. Which is why I got rid of it. The execution of it was all wrong. I regretted the paint scheme the minute I got it back from the shop. But, it was done. Live and learn.

If you can, look for a IX. They really responed to a few mods, where you don't have to go to deep in to the pockets. A 3" TBE, MBC, Filter and a Tune, will get you over 300 awhp. You might be able to find some decent wheels used, but don't go cheap on tires. With a great platform like the EVO IX, you can spend the rest of your hard earned money on your kids. I'm sure they'll enjoy the ride, especially with four doors.
I want something with a bit more "ooomph" than stock (however that is achieved on an Evo), but still have stock-ish driveability. Slightly firmer than stock ride, some nice rims/tires. Maybe a subtle front lip. It'd want to keep the stock bottom end if at all possible. Again, I've gotten into the money-pit that is the "built engine" and have no desire to go there again.
I honestly have absolute ZERO knowledge about turbos or how to modify them. Superchargers, whether roots type, or centrifugal I know inside and out, but turbos... nothing. So, I wouldn't know where to start.
Thanks in advance for suggestions
well your in luck because most of the evo's making a bijjjilllan horse power are still streetable lol. Keep it plain. body kits are junk and a waste, decals blow, Tarmac black is sexy :P I'm sure you can find what you want in a evo but its not a car to just jump in and drive they need lots of care and responsiblility for them to last long.
I think you should accidently misplace your tibby cough cough " who knows who stole it for parts" and find yourself a nice evo. If your not wanting to go BIG on it then a IX would be nice for basic mod's which may i add they take very well too.

TBE, tune, K&N filter, MBC, gauges (boost and oil pressure at least), turbotimer (if you feel the need)... With all that I was totally satisfied power-wise (and mods that make sense for you, meaning you don't NEED the gauges, TT, or MBC, but they're all things I would get and did) for the 3 years I had my Evo. 70 whp over stock. Then if you wanted a bit more you could go for cams and the intercooler/piping and probably call it good for awhile unless you seriously catch the mod bug. Just don't ride in any serious hp Evos, that's what made me want more power, driving/riding in a 400 whp Evo...
