Question NewMember and EVO IX owner Have some Engine Tuning Questions?

Just want o to start by saying hello, and im finally able to post! Don't mind the SN its her's!
Names JC and i Live in NJ and am a normal repair shop owner. I've worked on Evo's as far as Install of exhausts/clutches/normal maintenances/axles/suspension ect.
I own a 03 350Z (flame suit on) and do performance to that, but im not to familiar with turbo tuning. All customer's had parts ready and avaliable to throw on, so i never did the research so to say.

I've been doing some research now due to the fact that my GF recently picked up an 06 Evo IX somewhat modded, but i believe the dealer stooped her a tad. Ask if u want to know how.

So i've looked all over the site and i've found some amazing information on the Evo that im putting to good use. I still have some questions, as some things are hard to find although I've done my best of searching.

The Evo so far has TBE system, and HKS shroom style intake. In the NET SALE pix i noticed at one time it had header's as well, but when seeing the car (after the fact) i noticed they must have swapped the header's out for some OE junk yard ones. I see the junkyard # coding.

The ghetto rigging the previous owner had done left the stock BOV 100% open to atmosphere, and the little nipple that suppose to go to the manifold was broken. Low and behold over the weekend i managed to take it all apart pick up some vacuum hoses and reconnect it the normal way going by the vacuum hose diagram on the hood. Im guessing the previous owner must of had a boost gauge/boost controller, due to the vacuum hoses being all discombobulated. I drilled out the nipple area and glued my own nipple in place just so she can drive the car a little, but with the heat coming off the turbo i don't think it will last long.

Im going to call today and give them HELL, but some things i'd like to know are

Whats some good header's to buy?

I know the Stock BOV's the best from what i read but that one thread with the guy testing the greddy type S BOV, is it worth buying that one due to my stock one now is broke? I can change the springs as well, cause the evo was having that kind of driving problem due tot he BOV's malfunctions.

Boost Controller?
Gauges needed?
COBB AP...worth it?
Any updated piping worth it?
viii vs ix are they about the same thing? can i use same performance parts on both? Makes it tuff when ordering parts some say viii and some say ix ya know?

5th gear has a slight grind almost if you shift to fast, i had her buy some Agency shifter bushings and i was going to adjust and see if that takes care of the problem.

My girl wants to make the car our project so $'s not really an issue, i just wanna buy what works and makes power.
I'd appreciate the help~and that one thread tuning for dummies, loved it!!

BTW love the site amazing information Thanks!

welcome! great looking car! What do you plan to do with the car, how much power are you looking for? Let's start with the basics exhaust, downpipe, test pipe/high flow cat, intake, Hallman manual boost controller (thats what I use), fuel pump and hard piping. An exhaust manifold will make a difference but buy one after you decide if you are going to change the turbo. If you plan on keeping your stock turbo just buy another evo IX BOV.

Welcome and nice car!

See if the dealer will replace the BOV at their expense. No sense paying for something that you didn't break.

Change the transaxle fluid (all drivetrain fluids for that matter) and you may see that little grind diminish. You'll see a whole bunch of opinions about what fluids work best but a lot of people stick with OEM fluids. It all depends on what you will use it for. Based on what you said, the previous owner may not have taken the best care of it. What a shame.

Thank you! Lets see as far as power she wants to make it a fast little Evo, but still be able to whip it around town. Not so much as a daily but more or less a summer good weather day car. She's ready to throw $ into it, just want to figure out whats worth spending the money on to make the car drive good and make power.
So far the car has Complete TBE plus test pipe.
As far as the exhaust manifold/bigger turbo shouldn't the flange's be the same as stock? Say if i buy header's now, then later on update the turbo i'd have to re buy header's?

Oh yeah and as far as fluids im taking the car this Weekend and changing all the fluids even performing cooling system flush and thermostat and gasket change. I will also be taking more pix as well.

IX's tend to make more power than VIII's with simple bolt-ons. VIII's have a better selection of cam choices (BF272, JUN, etc)

As for gauges you can't go wrong with boost, oil temp, and a good wideband. If I were you I would get a good tune and a alcohol injection kit such as aquamist. You'd be surprised how much power can be squeezed out of the ix turbo and how much fun it can be on the streets. Since you are in New Jersey give Sean Ivey a call, he is an awesome tuner and does really good work.

Also, welcome to the forums

So far She has ordered
AEM boost guage and Wide band. Told her to pick up a PLX DM style but she likes the AEM, so can't argue their!!

Updating post, So i called the dealer where she bought the car and to compensate for missing parts according to the NET PIX, the sales guy was very kind enough to send me BOOST-A/F-OIL PSI Gauges! what a nice guy!

One question i have tho for the sitting of the stock BOV. Does it sit horizontal or vertical? meaning does the end pipe face down into the intake boot, or does the side pipe face down into the intake boot? Im looking at a dealer diagram of the boot and hose routing and it looks sideways.

horizontal and the side pipe should face the intake the nipple on the bov should face the turbo then run a vacume line from the nipple to a another nipple of the right end of the valve cover thats where it should be then from the side pipe run the factory hose to the bottom of the upper charge pipe

Beautiful thank you!

So i've heard the Greddy Type S BOV's the best but i believe they discontinued it, and the RS isnt so great i've also heard.

Should i just keep the stock one? Or is there any other ones out there worth the buy? HopUpRacing told me HKS sells a lot, haha.

a t3/t4 flange for most garrett turbos (gt30r, gt35r, etc) thats for big hp #'s 470+

heres what i'd do

clutch (you'll thank me later for that)
intake (aem, injen etc)
Fmic ( ams, perrin, turboxS etc
full intercooler pipe kit ( for some fmic dont come with the pipe kit like the turboXs
Bov Kit ( greddy, hks etc) remember you can only resc. unless you have a maf translator
head studs (arp)
cams( hks greddy, cosworth, brian crower) only mivec spacific and anything over 272s i'd upgraded the valves and springs
cam gear (exhaust only) you can not replace the intake cam on a MIVEC engine. There is really no reason to do so since the intake cam is a variable timing cam. The exhaust you can and I highly recommend it.( i have a extra hks gear if u want it)
fp green turbo
700cc or higher injectors
255lph fuel pump

that set up should at least put down 350 to 425 depending on the tune

best place to order parts is lancershop.com

since your in nj, i'd take it turbotrix to get tuned there really good

hope that helps you

I've been reading mixed thought on almost everything! But So far the GReddy Type S bov's got good reviews from almost everyone.

I ordered the Stock BOV just to get things running. I was planning on updating most of the little things 1st. Piping/injectors/fuel pump/get the gauges installed due a cobb AP reflash, then go bigger after all this.

As far as an intake. Can anyone inform me on if the Injen Sp1989 is worth buying. It comes complete with the I/C piping.
As far as a New I/C what is a good one to get as well?

I have the turbosmart BOV and it work great. As for the intercooler, Perrin makes a nice large intercooler.
