From STI to EVO. Help me out.

Well guys heres my story. I *owned* a 2006 sti. All bolt ons, water meth, tune etc eventually putting down 332 whp and 382wtq. Unfortunately someone decided they needed my car more than me and it was stolen. After waiting for 3 weeks I finnaly got response from the cops saying they cant recover the car and my insurance paid it off.

So now Im back in the game of buying a car. My wife has always loved the EVOS more than the STIS and I figure its time for a new challenge so Im thinking of going EVO this time. Problem is Im not sure which evo I exactly want. I do know I want a bone stock evo with low to no miles. So the obvious first answer is the EVO X but Im not a big fan of buying cars their first year out due to all the problems they usually have. So my next guess is a 07 MR?

Any guidance and help on what car to look for, price, what path to take with parts etc. is appreciated. Thanks

you mean 06 MR ,
It all depends on how much the insurance paid off. I am also looking but I dont have the cash to shell out for the X .

The Reason he's saying 06 Mr is because there was no 07 Evo's they skipped a year. But if you ask around you'll see that a Non-MR is most popular for drag racing, because the 5 - Speed not only has been known to be stronger but the one less gear and range between the gears helps best in the quarter mile. I'd skip the X entirely.. Not only is it a first year production car which you already noted but it hasn't been proven to take as well to mods as the good ol 4G63. I just don't see the cost beating the benefits for me at this time.

For that much cash you can get a nice 05 Evo GSR - 5-Speed and for about 8G's get some sweet power mods.. You should be in the 400 - 450 Whp Range if you get the right mods with that much money.

So im looking for an 06 then. Ok. What all does the MR have that makes it more expensive than the other models and is it worth it for what I intend to do. With my STI i never auto crossed, dragged around 25-30 times and wife drives it daily.

Welcome to the dark side. I first will say that people have mixed feelings about the 6spd. All MR owners I know LOVE IT. All GSR owners I know HATE IT. Its just like any other tranny, if you beat on it, it will beat on you. With the amount of bolt ons and meth in a evo you should be around 400whp, way more than you were. Goodluck and best of luck.

Yes Welcome!

The major differences are the dampeners, the transmission, wheels, and the aluminum roof panel although the SE's have the wheels and the aluminum roof panel in a 5 speed configuration.

I'm very pleased with my 06 AS MR but if I were to do it over again I would have a WW RS or possibly an SE soley because I enjoy dragracing and I love white cars.

The ride quality of an MR is very nice and my 6 speed shifts like butter. For a DD the MR provides a phenomonal driving experience day after day. I mean there's a huge difference between a GSR and MR when you have obstacles like potholes and railroad tracks. Include a rough road in your road test.

Ok, maybe a little exageration but it's a significant difference. The GSR's ride quality is similar to the STI. MR is a good notch above both for comfort and still handles. You can buy the MR Bilsteins used, or the aftermarket Bilstein HD.
