buying a evo... questions?

so im looking into buying an evo 8 or 9. i currently have a dodge srt4 so im familiar with the turbo setup. altho i do have a few questions about evo's.
what would be the best first mods the evo? i have read that they dont respond well to a bov, is this true? if so, is it just certain brands? how much hp is the stock engine/turbo good for? and how much hp can the stock clutch hold before replacing?

any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. also, anything i should be looking for when goin to purchase an evo?

thanks

My advice - put 100% of your attention into finding a solid Evo in good shape. One that hasn't been ragged out, beaten, and abused, one that shifts well through all the gears, where the engine doesn't burn oil, where the transfer case doesn't whine or make noises, where the clutch is solid. Hopefully, one that's straight and never wrecked. The bottom line is there's more than enough to worry about when looking for a solid running machine before you even think about putting the first mod on it.

That or just buy one from this forum that's already got a crap load of quality parts installed on it. That can save you a lot of time and money - as long as you have faith in the integrity of the drivetrain.

My two pennies.

thanks Evo_Someday, i will definately be taking a better look at the car. i am looking for one with low miles. curious, how often are the cluthes/trans replaced on the evos?
i was also looking thru the for sale forum and found a couple nice evos with mild mods list that i liked.

The popular belief is the stock engine reliably will handle up to around 450whp with a great conservative tune. The stock clutch is going to eat crap if you try to launch it with more than 400whp.

And no the Evo's don't respond well to a BOV because it tricks the computer into think it needs more fuel when you release air into the atmosphere. You want the sound get a cone filter its loud trust me.

Your first mod should be exhaust period full TBE and if possible test pipe HFC. Secondly you should get a tuner to get your car up to potential with an exhaust you'd be surprised how well it responds to that.

If you want more suggestions read the modding for dummies thread already posted.

Please re-read the stickys - your questions are answered there.

TBE, MBC + Gauge, FP, Filter, DV*, FMIC*, UICP*, LICP, Tune...

Which also is the order in the Official Modding Sticky.

Any VTA is a no-no unless you have MAP (i.e. AEM). Stiffer the spring - more the DD will suffer. Never get the HKS SSQV - that will never work right on this car.

how much hp is the stock engine/turbo good for?
People have done 400+ on E85 or meth inj. On pump 360-380. IX turbo is better.

and how much hp can the stock clutch hold before replacing?
Its not hp but tq. And it depends on the driver. If you plan on racing it then just replace it. Save the headache. And I never liked the stock clutch feel. But to each their own.

In general, if it was abused poorly then get it cheap. If you cannot get it cheap get a better one. Issues from poorly driven cars - TC, trans, engine (worse case).

how much boost can u run on the stock turbo and injectors?
On race gas - 24-26 is the efficiency for the 05 8, 26-27? for the IX. On pump gas 22-23 is the highest I would go.
