EVO VIII Reliability...

Hey guys-

I am considering getting a used evo 8 but dont know anyne who has one. How are your cars holding up? Are these pretty good cars and if i were to get one with high miles are there jdm swaps that can be done?

I know its a completely different car bt my 1990 300zx was very problematic, I mean there were always little annoying things going wrong, and they are known for it. Id like to get an evo but if they are anything close to my Z i think i will pass.

Thanks,

The evo is no more problematic than any other comparable car. Problems do arise on high mileage vehicles regardless of make or model. The evo is no exception. The main thing is realizing that performance cars require strict maintenance. And your problem is going to be finding a high mileage evo that was maintained properly. And another problem is modding. The car most likely will have been modified and returned to stock at least once. And when guys do this before they sell, they generally don't give a **** and just throw stuff back together. But the main thing is if you take care of the car, it will take care of you!

Just do a search on here and read the info on what to look for when purchasing a used evo.

cars have come a long way in the past 20 years. Find one that hasn't been molested, or in an accident, and with the lowest amount of miles that you can afford and you'll be fine.

Yeh, I didnt really think about the fact that the Z is 18 yrs. Old. Another very good point.

Mechanically speaking the Evo is pretty darn reliable. Every car has it's little problems, and the Evo is no exception, but I can't think of many major mechanical ones.

I have owned my Evo since mid 04 and at 115K miles am just now having my first problem...which is my own fault...maintanence neglect. Water pump is going out and clutch is finally starting to slip.

I think you were making a good positive point about Evo reliability, but I just want to add that those are hardly even model-specific reliability "problems," but rather regular maintenance of things that wear out, especially on a car like the Evo.

In addition, I drive my Evo DAILY (not "daily driven" like some people who say that just because its registered and gets driven like once a week), year 'round, Autocross it regularly, take it snowboarding, haul groceries with it, you name it, it's my only car. It's a great DD IMO.

Oh, and your sig made me LOL, literally. I say things to that effect daily.

Have the car checked out by a shop that knows turbos and AWD systems. They can check for the high $$$ repairs and give you an idea what is worn out.

Budget at least $2K for new brake and clutch parts, even for well cared for cars.

I think 2k is a bit much for a well cared for car. Or even one that was beat. Unless it's highly modded and needes a twin disk. You can put new OEM quality brakes on these cars for way under $500 total. I put race pads and new rotors on mine for under $800. You should be able to do a clutch for less then a grand or right around.

My 8 has been super reliable for me...it's in pristine condition and is mechanically up to date.

New tires, new clutch and flywheel, new plugs, all fluids changed... If you're interested check my sig for the link. Best of luck!

should be fine just as long as you keep up with the basica matianance and the car remains unmolested

im going on 4 years in January, the only problem I had so far is my ac leaked all the freon (fixed under warranty), also my breaks are starting to vibrate. AND THATS IT.
compared to all my other cars I had, my EVO is problem free.

25,000 miles here; almost 3 years, and I have yet to have a single problem with my IX.

Had my Evo for 5 years (2003 evo 8) and not a single mechanical problem other than regular wear & tear. 62k miles. Not a single breakdown ever. Most reliable car I've ever had. Even with all the mods.

Maintenance is easy, but can get expensive.
