looking to buy an EVO help...

Hey,

My wife is close to giving me the go ahead on a new used car! I took a ride in an evo a while back and i'm thinking I might go this way. I've had mustangs, E36 M3's etc... However, I like the idea of a turbo motor and all wheel drive. I would like an evo 9 but would consider an 8 too. What do I need to look out for and what should I stay away from? Is the MR worth the extra? This is new to me..

Thanks

You're going to get a lot of different answers buddy. The first answer would be "search" and one of those answer from the mod is "CLOSED" But it all depends what you want to do with your car: Track, roadrace, drag, autox or just a fast DD. If you're thinking about drag race, most people would say a non-MR would be the best choice. As far as what to look for, check for wear and tear. It's your choice if the engine is modded and you still want it. By all means, the car is pretty much beated up. GL

Its going to be a daily driver. I drove some rich guys Nissan GTR and have wanted an all wheel drive turbo car ever since! The evo is more in my price range A guy my brother works with took me for a ride in his evo but, hes kinda shady so, I can't go to him for advice

I'm afraid to buy one and have the clutch blow up a week later. Or find out the transmission is about shot...

I was in ur situation about 7 months ago. As far as the evo its the best car I have owned and I have been through several cars at the age of 28. Its pretty common sense when you look at one. Heavily modded is a no no unless the owner was a fanatic and never drove it. If the car has a replaced clutch at lower than 20k its been driven hard, just my opinion. Look at wear and tear items and you will get an idea of how it was taken care of. If there body and interior was banged up I can guarantee the car was not taken care of. These cars require a ton of maintenance like fluid changes every 20/k or so, tires, brakes, clutches wear faster than your average car. Don't know what your price range is but lower mileage is sometimes better. Call mitsu with a vin number and see if it had warrantee work. In my opninion stay away from 03-04 evo's they seem to have more problems than later years. Most evo's have been modded but if you can findone lightly modded I think its the best bang for the buck cause you will spend the money on minor bolt ons anyway trust me! Just look for bad installations and what brand parts they installed. If the cars is hacked iand parts were installed poorly walk away. Test drive fro a long time. Get the tranny hot and see how it shifts. Transmissions in evo's are notchy but shouldn't grind, if it does synhros are shot. To test the clutch put the car in 5th or 6th and floor it until you reach a high rpm. If its slips its obviously on its way out. As far as MR's or not well u read the previous posts. I liked te MR SE it has everything I wanted. The interior, carbon dash, HIDs, tailights, vortex generator, MR SE BBS wheels, SE LIP, ix's have a better turbo and larger hotside (big advantage), MIvEC engine, etc. Yea you can buy all of this aftermarket or used but who wants to install all of that? Like I said its what's in your price range! As far as 6speed or 5speed unless your doing serious road racing or have over 450whp don't worry about the 6speed its a great tranny. If you take care of the car and are somewhat mechanical it will be easy on the wallet. Best thing I ever bought! So far haha!b Hope this helps. If you have quests. pm me I am willing to help!
