Do you ever get sick of the powerband?

I was always wondering this with the EVO, I remember driving a 2.0L WRX and hating the lag with a passion. Hell getting out into traffic was down right dangerous at times.

I got sick of it like crazy, even driving friends' (heavily) modded Evos I get sick of it. That's part of a laundry list of reasons why I got the Porsche. And part of the extended laundry list of why the STi is a great combo of both cars.

Turbo lag FTMFL.

Uh, not yet. My modded EVO's powerband is much more fun than my modded sti's.

After a good tune the powerbands are alot more useful.

What I find odd is that reviewers often applaud the Evo for it's wide powerband and lack of turbo lag.

Coming from an S2K, no! Imagine having 5900RPM of turbo lag.

well with the stock turbo there is more or less little to almost no lag. The stock turbo has more bottom end torque that most large v6's. so i'm not sure what your talking about.

I'm not really sick of mine yet but it does **** me off when I know that I can't pull out into some traffic without bouncing off the 2 step lol. Then that's just dangerous so I'd rather wait til I get plenty of time to get up to speed. Another thing I don't like is that you can fluctuate the throttle for the amount of power necessary until you need just a "little" bit more. Once you need a little bit more and you get over like 10psi, might as well just hold on lol.

Powerband =/= "lag"

Powerband affects the boost threshold, which stock on my IX is about 2700 rpm which is actually not that bad for a little 4 banger. The civic I test drove did not make power until way over that. And there is some power below the boost threshold; enough for anything that is probably not stupid to be doing on public streets anyways.

Lag is the delay between stepping on the gas (when above the boost threshold) and when the boost comes on. Lag is not too bad on a stock Evo either.

Yes Amby, I am a ****ing fanboy, Evo legghumper That is why mine is being retired for a E30

Seriously though, it is certainly no BMW -35 motor, but it is not too bad for a little turbo 4.

Of course, it does not compare to a big, nasty V8 but that is why God created 2 car garages

edit: You hit the 2 step trying to pull out in front of traffic? What is it set for?

They haven't driven cars that have appropriate DD powerbands. The Evo is great, don't get me wrong, I'm even repping Utah Evos stickers on the sides of my STi. But my friend's 400 whp FP Green, cam'd, meth inj Evo goes from 70 to 80 in 5th slower than my stock STi goes from 70-80 in 6th. That's called turbo lag. Now, 80-100 he gets there in 1/10 the time I do

I remember the first weeks with the Porsche felt like a dream. I couldn't believe I was driving on the freeway in 6th without ever even thinking of downshifting to pass people. The other day I drove that friend's car, great car and super fast once it gets going, but the gurgling motor struggling to move the car is not a sound I love.

With the stock turbo and a tune and exhaust it is a little more bareable, but still horrible IMO. Riceball if you have a stock Evo I'd love to do a top gear pull from 40-80 with you (closed course, of course). Just to show you how "little to no lag" the Evo has.

We know what turbo lag is and don't need a description... I was just joking about bouncing off the 2 step to pull out in traffic. I don't hit full boost until about 4700 rpms. When your a grandpa driver like me on the streets who rarely sees boost, you need a good bit of space when pulling onto roads with heavy traffic. Most of you people that are saying it's not that bad are probably still on the stock turbo and don't understand the point of this thread. Were not trying to learn anything from it, just posting whether you like your powerband or not.

I don't know about your friend's car or the 5sp in general but my IX in 6th going 70-80 is plenty quick (mods are everything up to cams + meth and I'm now deciding which upgraded turbo to go with).

what annoys me is the on/off nature of the car

That's what I was trying to describe in my first post. It's either full boost or not. No happy medium.
