Opinions on MR SE

Hi guys,

Long story short, I always wanted to purchase an Evo. Joined the forum in '03 (lost my old user name password), and year after year kept saying I would buy one new. 2006 rolled around and was set to buy a IX MR, but just couldn't pull the trigger. Recently had the chance to test drive a few IX's and X's and realized I should have bought one a while ago...

Anyway, I recently met an older gentleman looking to sell his '06 MR SE. Its in amazing condition. Not one ding or scratch on the entire car. Not even one bit of curb rash on any of the 4 rims. Interior is perfect as well. 47,000 miles. Local guy, original owner.

Has all the receipts for every oil change and trans fluid change, all done by the dealer (South Coast Mitsu). Also, all modifications done by the dealer...had them on the car for the last 20K miles...

Mods are:
-Intake (perhaps AEM, can't remember)
-TBE (I think it was Invidia)
-ETS aftermarket intercooler
-272 cams (can't remember which brand)
-MBC

We went for a spin and everything seemed great. Stock clutch, seemed to grab fine. The idle was a little bouncy, I guess to be expected from the cams. Spooled and boosted fine, stock MR gauge read 1.5 bar. No rattles, solid car.

My concern is there has not been a tune since installing these mods. And that was a while ago, 20K miles (maybe 1.5 years). Is that safe? It wasn't boosting at insane levels, and drove fine. But, is that harmful to install cams and not get a tune?

I realize the car is not running to its full potential without a custom tune, but could damage had been caused by these mods because of this?

Thanks for any input!

If you can make the Mitsu dealer do a compression test and leakdown test and they check out fine, I see it as a very good buy, unless your planning to mod it for a lot of power in which case stay away from the 6-speed.

^lol - the 6-spd is fine for power - just don't go crazy on it, not maintain it, and expect it to hold up under abuse. I have a 6-spd and the stock clutch pushing 470 to the wheels.

Yes, I will eventually have to replace the clutch as a wear item but my transmission is still holding very well with extremely little bits when I change the fluid (I really expected to see more on the magnet/in the fluid).

How much is this being sold for? I'd say an older person, original owner, all receipts from the dealer, you could pickup a nice, well-maintained car for cheap!

Sounds like a good deal, I would also suggest the compression and leakdown test. Those mods should have gotten a tune to see real power advantages, but they shouldn't have done any damage per say. It would be nice to know the brand of the cams though.

I too have the 6 speed, pushing 470/410 at the wheels, clutch went on me with the turbo upgrade, but the gears are still shifting like a dream. Just baby it with fluid changes and she will treat you well, provided you don't abuse it. The local tech told me that the time he really sees them go is when you are going under speed and do a drastic downshift and accelerate. He said the input shaft pulls a good percentage of the time. Good luck with the purchase. Let us know what happened and take some pictures...

Well I have heard off and on about 6 speed tranny and 5 speed tranny for power. But it seems like you are not near that power rate and sounds like with the power you should be putting down your evo is safe. Your car SHOULDN'T be hurt running off those cams without a custom tune as evo's come from the manufactorer very RICH! So in truth you maybe might have leaned out your RICH fuel mixture a little bit. But depending on what cams you have in that are 272 you might want to look at aftermarket springs and retainers if you want to be on the SAFE side.

Thanks for the input guys...

As far as future plans I would just let it be...not looking to go crazy...just enjoy the car for what it is. Maybe a safe tune to smooth out the idle. It would be my daily driver so I'd just like a reliable, yet fun car.

Good to know there's "probably" not any downfall due to cams/no tune. The bumper area around the muffler tip is not black at all...so I wouldn't think its running rich...
