My rusting trunk

I noticed that there was a mark starting to appear on the inside back corner of my truck where the wing sits. That was about 6 months ago. It continued to get worse over and started looking like rust. So finally I took the wing off over the weekend and found out that it is rust and it was starting on the other side in the same spot. So now I'm really confused because I thought that the trunks were made of aluminum which does not rust.
I brought it to the best body shop I know in the area that I have used before on other cars, and he quoted me $450 to acid brush the rust, re-spray and clear the trunk. I thought this was high.
I just wanted to know if anyone else has had the same problem and what you think about that quote.

Thanks

... go to a different body shop... when painting sometimes the cheapest may not be the best... see if its under warranty i thought there was some corrosion warranty, is it surface rust or under the paint?

Could just be the wings retention hardware rusting and staining your paint. Get some goof off and see if it removes any of it.

you may want to at least attempt to get the dealer to cover it, you do have a warranty against rust. If not 450 isn't terrible. I would recommend removing the wing and seeing how bad the damage is, this is a very common problem. It also may be cheaper to get a new trunk.

Oh trunk, not truck. Yeah, I'm curious how an aluminum trunk can rust as well... is a regular lancer trunk aluminum? If not, maybe the trunk isn't original? ...probably not, but you never know...

Aluminum doesn't rust, not like steal does. It can corrode though, I think it turns whitish instead of rust red.

Did you bring it to the dealer? This is a known, common problem.

That's because it's not aluminum. I can stick a magnet on my trunk and it'll stick so definitely not aluminum.

To OP, I have this problem too but I bought it like this from a dealership. They tried to paint over it with yellow but I can see it clear as day. I don't know how it formed but it's definitely getting worse. It's to the point where I can chip off paint and go strait to bare metal rust. If this is a common problem, I'm getting the trunk bondo'd, repainted, and keeping it wingless.
