Are you planning on purchasing from a dealer?

You should get a temporary or one-way permit from the state you plan to pay the sales tax in, which is generally the state you are registering/licensing it in. If you're buying a new car from a dealer, some states will allow a 30-day permit for a small additional fee but if it's from a private party and they elect to keep their [current] number plate, you're out of luck. Call your local DMV and inquire.

Be sure to notify your insurance company and get a temp ins card too.

Over the summer, I bought my evo from LA. I flew down there and did financing from a credit union here to previous owner's CU. I was never told that I had to have a one-way permit. Just make sure u have the most current registration form from the old owner and a copy of the bill of sale (if private party).

I know this is valid because once I came back to Oregon, I didnt get the OR license plates till 28 days after I owned the car. I was stopped twice by the police for headlight issues here in OR (only warnings were issued) and wasn't penalized for not having a temp permit nor OR license plates. Make sure u get license plates before 30 days was what I was told by DMV.

Good luck

If you're getting the car from a dealer, they'll get the temporary permit for you (for a small charge). If not, go to a nearby DMV and they'll get one for you. Also make sure that the car is insured as well.

It's a little more work to get the car out of state, but the savings usually make it well worth it. Plus it's such a fun ride home

Before? No. But as soon s it changes into your property, then it's a very good idea. And definitely before it gets any use on any public roadway - as required by most state laws.

You get the VIN and contact your insurance company. "Prices are quoted, decisions are made." and generally some money needs to change hands. If it's new, then most ins companies don't need pics or "condition documentation" but expect to provide proof of condition if it's a previously-owned car.

Yup State Farm told me the same thing bought both my current cars out of state. They were open so I had them fax over the insurance. But they told me if they were closed I would be covered for 30 days so I could contact them during that time to insure the car
