T-case maybe Tranny Help
T-case maybe Tranny Help
My transfer case was whining quite a bit when i bought the car and didnt know what it was. Did some looking and found that not using the right fluid in the rear diff will cause a whine so I changed that and put diaqueen and it still whined. Well then i was pulling out the driveway and something broke and sounded like the driveshaft was loose banging against something but it wasnt. Looking at rebuilds on Jacks site and found a little article about the death whine which described what my car was doing all along so my transfer case is busted. Put it on jack stands all four wheel off andhad my friend put it in gear a few times while I was under the car. The first time there was no loud clinking sound which it had been doing and was wondering about the quit until I pulled myself out and realized only the front wheels where spinning. Did this a few times and when all four would spin the loud metal clunk noise would come back. Now I was putting it on a trailer earlier today and had the front wheels up off the ground on boards and the rear wheels were still on the ground and I was trying to get the car to make it up the trailer but when I lefted off the clutch to go the car wold just rev and not move, the front wheels wouldnt spin. Would this be due to the transfer case being busted aswell or is the transmission possibly messed up also? Any input would help tremendously. THANKS
Well, the rear wheels not working is 100% a transfer-case issue. The front wheels also. Did you drain the fluid? Coffee grinds and/or burnt looking? Chances are you toasted the transfer case by running the wrong fluid or running it hard and then the fluid became a factor. I would send it to Shep or TRE for a rebuild and they will tell you exactly what happened. You can remove the transfer case rather easily on these cars so that would be the first step I would take. Send that out, replace it, when it is reinstalled if all problems are gone then you know it was strictly T-case, if not, then its time to go bigger and remove the transmission. I would make sure you have the right fluid in that as well. But chances are it is just the T-case acting up.
Thanks. I have only had the evo a few months and it whined the whole time and didn't know what it was. I changed the rear diff fluid but never checked the t-case. Thanks again for the info. Yeah I like TRE they built my gsx tranny and ut was a freaking beast.
