and to add to what evoforlife said, my brother has blown 2 rear struts in 70k miles and the transmission grinds in 2nd gear when you trying and run it to redline most of the time unless you really granny shift it but it does have the stock clutch in it and has been beat to hell and back so i guess the clutch lasting is a plus for that car. the evo is easier to shift with but has a slightly heavier clutch

I also wanted to ask how does it compare to the E46 M3.

The M3 had power pretty much anywhere. I can be going like 10mph in second gear and it would just pull!!! Handling is really tight with no body roll what so ever. And the brakes are just amazingly strong and sensative. Overall the car is great, but the maintenance is just CRAP. Exspensive and needs lots of attention.

Is the performance on the evo comparable to the M3 at all?

Im looking to buy a mildly modded evo because I dont want to spend the extra money on it at the moment because I am going to graduate study very soon. Right now I see some with just intake, exhaust, tune, fuel pump upgrade, and suspension mods. Should I go for something like that setup, or go straight for BONE stock.
I dont mind it being driven hard a bit because that is what Im going to do anyways, but just not beaten to hell.

Sorry for so much questions, but I also wanted to know which is better.
I saw some people with WORKS setup and some with Cobb. What is the difference and which one is better?

Which car is easier to work on if something goes wrong?
This will be my DD and fun car, so reliability is VERY important.
Please convince me to get the evo.
Why did you even start this thread if you already know what you want?

Something as simple as a cam install on a WRX/STi is a 4-5 hour job. For the Evo it'll take roughly 1/2 hour, for someone who has done it several times.

I had a laguna seca blue e46 and it does not compare at all to an evos turning or speed even a stock suspension evo feels better and and MR will destroy it!!! I would consider an E46 cute for power and personally i like to buy a completely stock car because then i know exactly whats being done to it

lot of misinformation here. it all really depends on your goals. for 400whp+ the evo is the more logical choice. stock or lightly modded, i liked my sti a lot better. the evo just feels like a dog in comparison.

Is there any year and model evo I should stay away from?

The RS models seems like a big turn off to be because it has no abs and power windows.

Is evo lX much better than the Vlll?
lX cost about $5k more, but is it really worth the money?

id personally like the rs model cuz of the lightweight but its not for most and an evo 9 has a bigger stock turbo, mivec, and a metal bypass valve because of these mods it will make more power then an 8 on stock turbo and bolt ons and they look better in my opinion

It will take longer than that for a wrx/sti. The engine needs to come out in order to do the cam job. Plus you will spend extra money because you have to buy 4 camshafts because of the engine design!

I'm with evoforlife. The sti felt like a dog to me. the sti had slower throttle response and didn't hit full boost until later on a smaller turbo than the evo.....Oh and got to love the understeer!

If your not into a track set up then stay away from the RS
I have been told that the MR has issues w/ the 6spd tranny
also heard the same said about the evo 8
if you have the money get a evo 9 better looking, better tranny, better turbo
and I think it has a couple of other things going for it as well
