Buying an '03 Evo 8

Hi guys, I test drove an Evo 8 GSR on Saturday. It was the first time I've ever driven an Evo. I can say that I was thoroughly impressed, I've never driven a car that handled that well in stock form.

Im coming from a APS Single turbo G35 with about 380whp. There is a quite a power difference but i was very impressed with car in stock form. Definitely a lot faster than my G35 when it was stock.

I only had 2 concerns with the car. The transmission whined in first gear and the dealer said that they had to replace the rotors when they got the car.

This is an '03 but it only has 61000 miles on it. I've read that the gear whine is normal for these years but is it normal to replace rotors after 61000 miles?

I'm really excited to purchase the car and becoming an active member of this community. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks-

EvanP246

Well evo's tend to have Tranfer case problems and that is where your usual whine comes from. The fact that you said that you heard it in first gear makes me think its not anything to worry about. Evo's already have a loud transmission. When you first start it, you can usually hear some type of whine.

You should become worried if your driving it around 45-60 mph and you heard a very load whining/drowning noise that is coming from basically right below you. Look it up on youtube... Evo Transfer-case whine

I've also replaced my rotors. Nothing to worry about, I would assume it was based on the precious driver. Is the car modified or does it look like it was previously modified. Perhaps it's someone from the forums old car and you can get a history on it. That would be best as otherwise you dont know if the car was beat on, original block, etc...

Thanks for all the quick responses guys. There was no whine over about 15 mph so I guess I'm in the clear. The previous owner of the car was a guy in his 50s. He had bought the car brand new in '03 but traded it in a few weeks ago. The car is 100% stock. Just the way I want it so I can start from scratch. The only downfall is the stock stereo. Its a big step down from the Bose in the G35, so I'll be upgrading to better components shortly after buying the car. Nothing crazy though, just something that sounds clean.

Some people say that I'm downgrading from the G but I believe that it may be a downgrade in luxury but definitely an upgrade in performance and overall technology.

Is there anything that I should replace or add as soon as I get the car?

In the luxury aspect your down grading, but when it comes to the performance index.. there is not comparision. A Stock evo would probably beat a turbo'd g35 with the amount of hp you put down around a road course regardless of being stock. If you want some extra power right away, just got your normal bolt-on's such as downpipe, catback, piping..

So are you trading in the g for the evo? Both cars look very well taken care of. I have a g35 sedan that's black and I love it except there is more room in the evo vs the g.

As far as rotors go, I've replaced mine around 40k so no worries with the one your looking at.

Nah, not trading. I'm selling the G privately then buying the Evo. Do you have anything done to your sedan?

Both cars look clean, first thing I got for my Evo was an Evo 9 BOV, the metal one. The 8's have the plastic one and I read that they tend to leak. I have been extremely happy with mine. You can usually find them on here for a decent price. Also everything Brsox said plus a tune will give you a decent increase in power.

the tcase can be serviced by shep or jon@tre for not that much. change out the bolts and put it the magnet plate so no metal shavings get in the system. your transmission is no prob and you can rebuild it as well. get a metal evo 9 bov, and you're golden!

Rotors warp. I even talked to a Mitsu rep. It happens.

As long as it doesn't sound like a locomotive, the transfercase is okay.

Good luck with the car.

They tend to make that litle noise is comon in a used or modified evo , but if you not satifisfied just take it to a repair shop and have them check just to make sure.
