Which path would you take???
I just scooped up an evo 9 MR. I'm looking to play with some. The only thing I'm really worried about is the 6 speed and it potential for failure. I think keeping the torque down slightly could help save it. The car has been stock it's whole life and has 71k on it. The car will be getting a complete fluid change to trans, t case, rear shortly as well as a timing belt. I plan to also add an exedy twin regardless which path I go.
Here are the 2 possible pathes...
Option #1: Do a good sized cam, with the usual bolt ons keep the stock turbo and push it. My fear with this is the torque taking it's toll on the trans
Option #2: Keep the stock cams, bolt on a 35r turbo kit and toy around with low 20's for boost. This will keep torque down for the trans but it will be a little less responsive (Save on gas) And more of a peaky type power band.
This car is my new DD so I'm trying to keep the car pretty streetable for the time being at least LOL. Regardless it will be getting supporting mods, but it will remain on 93, POSSIBLY, POSSIBLY E-85 if I feel like havuing some more fun. But I'd like to keep it on 93. The car will also remain on the stock ecu.

As for the 6-speed, at these power levels you have nothing to worry about, especially if you don't plan on road racing. You may want to search for the big 6-speed thread and see why some transmissions can fail. Good luck.

I installed an exhaust last week, I'm waiting for the cable to get here so I can put the boost controller in and start toying with that. I see what you are saying I just see me getting bored with a 110mph car. Although I have no plans to drag race this all the time I will probably hit the track a couple times for fun.
The 35r spool isnt as bad as people make it out to seem. I'm used to a 67mm or bigger when I had the 2g. It just seems with the 35r I could save on gas mileage as the stocker spools almost too quick. Not sure still just getting some ideas going. I'm looking forward to playing with the ecu and getting to know it for a little bit before just bolting a 35r on it...

My reasoning is I have a 35r literally staring me in the face. I dont see the powerband being that unuseable. With the 35r keeping the torque slightly lower helps the life of the 6 speed. With the short gears the rpm's come pretty quick. The problem I see with the green and other smaller bolt on style turbos is the torque level rising...
The goal is to keep it together. I'm pretty confident I can trap 120 on either the stocker or the 35r. The stocker will however be pushed rather hard to do this in a full weight car with the 35r not yet breaking a sweat.
Maybe it's just me trying to justify putting the 35r on it. I'm really not sure.

35 is a great turbo, but it really shines at high boost or on a built motor. but if you already have it you mine as well use it.
for 93 octane its been proven the bbk gives you the most usable powerband.

i would not be the slightest bit concerned with too much torque for the 6-speed on a stock turbo. the only place i would be worried about too much would be for the stock block. i say go full bolt ons with stock turbo, then if thats not enough upgrade to a fp red

Correct the car WON'T be a drag car. Will I do the occasional drag race? ABSOLUTELY!!! Right now the first mods that are going on the car are a Buschur Racing Cat-Back (Installed last week) DC Sport Catless downpipe, AWD Motorsports driveshaft, Hallman boost controller once my cable gets here. I'm going to start there, and se how it goes but I just see myself getting bored quick. I'm bored with the power it's making now...
PS - I don't care for dyno numbers, I prefer to use the trap speed as a measure of power if you will. Most everyone can understand that. 400whp is not created equal among dyno numbers and bench racers
