Civic Over Evo ... for right now

I was wondering if you guys think its in best interest to learn manual on an older car instead of just getting a brand new one and possibly messing that one up hahah.... I'm not too confident in buying a car like the Evo and learn manual...

I've seen stories about first time manual users getting Evos and that cringes in my mind to think about it hhaha...

I'm going for a Honda Civic hatch ( prolly 1997 or 1999) ... just to learn manual and get use to it... Good idea or just waste of money? Tahnx

Man... just find a beater to learn on don't spend the thousands on a car you don't intead on keeping. better yet, find a friend willing to teach you on their car for free. Think about it, you might end up spending $5k or more on a civic. you could use that money on stuff for your EVO. Anyways, just my 2 cents!

I'd say go for used 2.5RS or MR2 (not the new spyder crap)

It depends when you wanna/ have to get your car. I learned/ still am learning on my friend's maxima. I can drive it pretty good, but still a little rough around the edges. So long as you can drive the car for your normal commute (you don't have to know how to launch it right away), you should get the evo. I hate driving automatic, so no matter what I'm getting a manual. Try and find a friend who drives stick. There was another post from someone that said the evo is not the car to learn stick on.

i'll say do it if you can find a hatch for decent price.....
you might want to keep the civic as a beater after you are done with learning.

Call the DMV, ask about a driving school where you can learn to drive a manual. Why buy a POS if you want the EVO?

personally i think it depends on how long you have been driving. if youve only been driving 1-2 years or less i would probably say go with the civic. if youve been driving for a number of years i would say get the evo. learning a manual trans is not hard if your familiar with all the other aspects of driving. i dont know how old you are but i know i probably couldnt have hanlded an evo when i was learning how to drive( even tho id like to think i could have) thats just my $.02

Fellas,

The Evo was my first stick. I knew how to drive one before I bought it, but had very limited experience as I have had automatics my entire 7 years of driving. It took a while for me to make my starts nice and smooth, learn when to skip gears during light driving, what gear to downshift to at what speed to pass... but all in all I'd say the Evo was ok to learn on. No complaints from me, you just have to be able to feel it out.

driving a manual is not that big of a deal.

If you really want an Evo, go for it. You won't regret it. Take it real easy for a while. You have to break it in anyway so no hard driving for at least 500 miles.

The car is a joy to drive and you'll get confortable with it sooner that you think, even if it's your first manaul trans.

It's not that hard a car to drive! With 273 lbs of torque, you can nearly let out the clutch completely w/o stepping on the gas. I did this in a testdrive, and was really happy. Big difference from my old GTS with 132 lbs of torque (at redline).

Then again, I've had 4 cars now with manual transmission. I'll never go back.

Just have a friend teach ya - a couple tries and you'll be fine! Stay away from hills until you're ready, that's about it!

Evo's my first car. Was fairly easy to learn on, pretty forgiving, and hard to stall out with very low rpms. I've even had the car go down to 100rpms, give or take and then re-live again (don't know if that's good or not). I agree with what someone said above though. If this is your very first car, I'd do a lot of night time practicing before anything else, cuz once traffic gets into play, you'll start fighting cars cutting in and out of your lane, while trying to think about shifting, which isn't good.

a 97 hatch for 5 goosd luck. That style of hatch is usually around 8 ot at the least. Personally I would go for a 93-95. Those are nice and less expensive.

Yeah, the evo is my first car too. I had to learn on it... Compared to other cars i'd say taht the evo is a harder car to learn on, the clutch is too hard. But thats my Opinnion at least, took me 3 days to get a hang of manual tho. haven't stalled since.

Get a different car still it'll be good to use just to get around in winter time and stuff. unless you want to fix your evo when someone slams into you...
