Vibrating steering wheel

Hey everyone,

So I noticed this past weekend that driving on the highway anytime I went 80mph or over my steering wheel starts to vibrate a lot. It was intermittent and therefore don't realize it's a cause for concern. I had my brakes changed less than two months ago and so I'm sure they inspected my shocks and struts and all. I never had this problem before when I think of it but than again I don't drive like a maniac every day either. Does anyone have any similar experience?

It could be normal tire wear causing them to be unbalanced.

Unless you have something loose in the front end, it's tires. Have them rotated and balanced. Problem should go away.

Could also be just low tread as well, might need to be replaced.

tires usually balance themselves out at above 70 mph.....check for irregular tread wear....if lugnuts were over torqued it could cause a shimmy and even possibly warp a rotor....if none of the above jack up front wheels grab at 12 and 6 and move your hands back and forth to check for play then at 9 and 3 and move back and forth to check for play but make sure you are not turning the steering wheel which could cause an illusion.

Good luck

Thanks everyone. I had new rims installed two weeks ago but I don't think that caused it. Also I had new brakes installed and rotors turned back in December. Looks like I'll be taking it in soon.

The new wheels might not be balanced or need hub centric rings if the hub bore size is not the same as the hub. Look into those.

hub centric rings are a must, checking the balance would be the first thing to check. If you dont find anything there check for any worn suspension components

For sure it is the new rims causing the problem. Same thing has happened to me after I got new wheels, I just took them back to the shop and they rebalanced for free. Problem went away. They might have just had an apprentice balancing or accidently put the wrong weights on.
