Evo 8/9 reliable as a DD....?

Hey guys. I have an 06 Civic Si right now which I like. It's slow, but a decent handling car. And the reliability is awesome. However, an Evo is my dream car. Specifically a BBY 8. Just something about them. My friend let me drive his and I fell in love.

My only concern with upgrading from my Si to an Evo (besides insurance) is the reliability. The 8s are 9-10 years old now. Are they still holding up as being reliable?

Thanks for any info!

Chris

It all depends on how you drive the car, care for it, its previous owner's care. They are great cars, many people on the forums drive them daily. Here are a couple of discussion threads on it that may help you answer some questions.

Good luck!

My car is an 05, and while it has a LOT less miles than most people, my car would be great DD. Everything runs on point, and it's taken care of. As long as you take care of the things that need to be taken care of and don't beat the crap out of it 24/7, it will last just like with anything. I know people who do daily their Evo's and they have 100K+ and still running strong!

I just passed 164K today....only thing go out on me was the balance shaft belt and crank sensor. I've done 4-5 timing belt jobs (all but one myself) and had the head rebuilt after my adjustable cam gears wore out allowing my timing belt to slip and bend some exhaust valves...this was the last timing belt job I did.

Regular maintenance and general car knowledge is key to keeping it up and running for many many miles.

I dd mine for the last 55K miles, has 81k miles on it. I drive it hard. it sees WOT and redline nearly everytime it's driven, it's pushing out an extra 140HP for the past year.

it has never failed to get me home or even threatened not too.

Like others have said, the car is pretty solid if you do the maintenance. It's not cheap, but it doesn't cost an arm and a leg either. But you'll be happy about it in the long run.

I've owned by IX for over six years (bought it brand new) and it's been completely trouble-free, other than a couple minor things fixed under warranty that aren't really even worth mentioning (alignment and clip in the fuel door). I don't see the car giving me any problems anytime soon. Like someone else said, 4RETECH is a member on this forum who has already gone past 300k miles and is still going... all with 400+ whp.

Also, the 4G63 is pretty solid. The fact that it has been the platform used since the early '90s or whenever just shows that it's been good enough to be used all that time, and the kinks obviously would have been worked out well before they were even sold in the US.

My 8 was an awesome DD and I had an 03 so personally I was impressed with the vehicle minus the gas MPG. Of course with my set up I wasn't expecting my gas to really be there but it was an awesome DD even during heavy traffic. As mentioned previously above it does depend on how you treat your car, as they saying goes "drive it like you stole it." Not the best idea for a DD if you plan on keeping your car as a DD. So make sure the maintenance is completed and whatever else it requires..

I have a guy on my Civic forum who used to have a 9 saying that he was changing brake pads every 15k miles and tires every 40k miles. is he exaggerating, or is that about right?

you can go through a set of pads in a weekend if you track it....its all about the way you drive.

Like I said before, I have 164K on my evo 8 and it's still going strong. My pads have been replaced 3 times. Do the math....roughly 55K per set for my DD and I use aftermarket Hawk pads (im actually due for another set now). Tires? I got 40K on my last set and they are not 'high performance' by no means but last for my commuting needs...they suffice for my occasional on and off ramp spirited driving...lol... You can always pick up a spare set of wheels and put a nice set of sticky rubbers on them for your weekend romps and then swap back to your commuter wheels and tires....just a suggestion...

The car can easily be DD'd as long as your expectations aren't one of Honda-like mpg and a Mercedes-like comfort level. I have no problems with mine. Gas mileage isn't awesome but it's decent for something with AWD, the kind of performance it has despite not being tuned for mpg or having any of the more recent mpg-assisting technology now being added to many cars. I average 21-22 mpg overall and can consistently hit 24-25 mpg on the highway, though I've hit a 30 mpg tank average once and 29 mpg twice. It takes a lot of self restraint though to reach those numbers, but hitting 24-25 on an all highway trip just requires limited shenanigans.
