New and have questions
Ive never owned a evo before and im thinking about getting one soon, I have a gti and love it. I dont really know much about evo's but i herd that the 9 is the best one but i also like the X. I was wondering which one is actually better for modding and driving and overall. I dont plan on having a 800 HP evo but maybe a stage 2 with other mods like a water/meth kit. I dont like that the new evo x is 5 speed but i also dont want to end up with an old evo that will just b problems finding mods and parts. Any suggestions on which would be the better choice?
Welcome.
Which evo is best is entirely subjective and you're going to likely get votes for and against all of them as everyone has their preferences and plans for their cars. The best thing you can do is read up on all the models and trim levels and figure out what your long term plans are for the car.
Here's a couple threads that would be a good starting point:

They're all good for modding. Your specific goals won't really require the stronger 4G63 iron block, so don't feel like you shouldn't mod the 4B11's aluminum block, which has actually turned out to be pretty sturdy for most applications. The VIII/IX are VERY responsive to simple mods, especially when tuned, but the X ends up being a little bit more responsive than that, which is impressive. I remember when people were first starting to reflash the X's ECU, they were getting amazing numbers from small things. And seeing how the Evo X has been around for five or six years at this point, I think we can consider it to have a pretty solid motor.
I don't think it's hard to find parts for the Evo VIII/IX, especially with the kind of online communities that we have now, but there is always going to be the risk of it having problems like you pointed out. It's a solid platform that can last even with more power than stock, but it really depends on the previous owner(s) and how they drove and/or maintained the car. And the ideal examples are fewer and farther in between, so you'll just have to be careful in searching for one.
There are a lot more Evo Xs out there (at least on the market), plus you still have the option of buying a brand new one, which isn't a bad idea when dealing with a high-performance AWD car like an Evo, since the wrong previous owner can really make later ownership of that car be difficult, contrasting to something like a Civic Si that can probably deal with negligence a little bit better without it causing significant problems.
