Hi!!!...BTW my Evo is F'in up.

First off I'd like to introduce myself to the boards with big HELLO!!!
**Ron Burgundy voice**

I have an 03' Lancer Evolution VIII (who doesn't)

anyways, I have lately been having problems with boost loss....I guess.

At around 5k rpm it now makes a high pitched wistle and I get about a 10psi drop through high RPM. sometimes its more and some times its less, but its still making that noise and its still going slower.

About the car: Its completely STOCK!

If anybody has an idea as to what this is and what I can do to fix it, please lend me your knowledge.

My search results conclude buying a boost controller..... but I don't want to over ride something b/c ITS STOCK, I want to fix it.

Again, any info reguarding this would be awesome!

Again.......Hello!

Brandon

1) Open trunk
2) Remove 2 plastic clips from the trunk liner
3) Open Hood
4) Insert clips into plastic intake snorkel and fasten it down SECURELY to the front of the engine bay
5) Drive, boost, and enjoy
6) Send $10 to my PayPal account
7) The End.

Warrtalon Apr 11, 2006 07:47 PM

I'm dead serious (except for #6). Go do it now - don't waste another minute.

sounds like youre a little in over your head. You sound much better suited to be driving an S2000.

s14unimog Apr 11, 2006 07:50 PM

i'm going to try right now...but I can't see how that makes a difference

Warrtalon Apr 11, 2006 07:52 PM

I'll explain it to you in great detail AFTER you do it. Put it this way...if you see that the clips are missing or loose, you will know right away that your car is about to get fixed. How else would I know to point you there, eh?

If your clips are in there and fastened securely, then you have a separate problem, but I'd bet money on my diagnosis.

You better give warrtalon $10!

what the heck?

i'm lost on this one... hehe

Warrtalon Apr 11, 2006 08:06 PM

Dahaka, it is the dumbest thing of all time, and I fell victim to it. For a week, I thought I had a boost leak that I couldn't find. I pressure tested my Evo 4-5 times (found 4 leaks and fixed them all, so that was nice), but that didn't fix it. I switched BOVs...that didn't fix it. I was pulling my hair out until a buddy of mine asked where my intake snorkel clips were. I told him I broke them when installing my MBC, because I didn't know they were reusable (did the MBC at night by streetlight). He showed me where to get some out of my trunk, and I put them in. Suddenly, my car was fixed, even though I had no idea that was the problem.

Now, I know what was happening and how to explain it, so whenever I see these symptoms, I jump on it. It's not an easy thing to search for, but I've helped probably 10 people diagnose this ever-so-embarrassing problem...

s14unimog Apr 11, 2006 08:28 PM

What the crap.... the car works great!!!! You are amazing and I can't believe that was it.....so mater chief, what is it that happens when the clips come out?

just another question according to my Blitz boost guage I hit 1.37 bar and drop back to 1.05 when I boost hard. The car feels normal and great but is THAT normal.

I love evolutionm.net!!!!

Warrtalon Apr 11, 2006 08:36 PM

Ok, here is what happens:

When the clips aren't there, the snorkel is not fastened down, so it flaps in the wind. When stationary, it appears to sit there nice and snug while hooked into the stock airbox. However, at around 6000rpm at full boost, there is enough sucking force that the snorkel gets sucked up against the hood, thus cutting off your air supply and choking the turbo. The resulting symptoms are:

- Loud whistle that sounds like a huge boost leak
- Boost immediately drops to 10psi if not lower
- If you stay in boost and shift fast, it continues doing it through every gear (I found out by doing an 1/8th-mile drag run with almost 0 boost the whole way wondering wtf was going on)

Your boost is normal for an 03. It's peaking at 19.5psi then tapering to around 16psi like it's supposed to.

This is great! You have seen it all huh Warr

s14unimog Apr 11, 2006 09:22 PM

Awesome, thanks very much for the help, I can't tell you enough how much of a headache that was!

mad Props to you: Warrtalon
